Review: Dead Nation – Road of Devastation

Dead Nation has seen a recent surge of popularity since it was part of the Welcome Back package.  The impressive PSN title has amassed over 3.8 million zombie exterminators, who have wiped out 13 billion zombies worldwide.  Next month will mark the one year anniversary of the game’s release, and to celebrate, Finnish developer Housemarque has released the DLC expansion Road of Devastation.  Incidentally, if you’ve never played Dead Nation and are interested in picking it up, check out our review!

It’s important to note that Housemarque independently funded this DLC, as they state on their website.

“After the initial release of the game, we talked with Sony and made a unique arrangement to bring DLC to the market.  We funded the development and Sony published the additional content.”

–Olari Kuittinen – Housemarque CEO

The DLC is playable as either single-player, or online/local co-op.  The DLC begins as you (and your partner, if it applies here) escape the Eggogate laboratories.  The game gives you some funding to get yourself off the ground, which we recommend that you utilize….fully.  This little package of DLC is very challenging, and you’re going to want to have every advantage.

Taking your first steps outside of the gate, you’re given an option.  Which road to take?  Each path has its own rewards, along with its own dangers.  Some of those perks include weapons and methods of dispatching enemies not found in the game.  Additionally, some new kinds of enemies lay in wait for unsuspecting survivors, as well as some new trophies to collect.

SPOILER ALERT!   If you want to find out for yourself, skip the next paragraph!!

We want to give our viewers the skinny on what they’re getting themselves into.  If the DLC were free, I’d let you find out for yourself, but since you do have to plop down some chump change for this, we’re just going to tell you.  Road of Devastation is a never-ending mode.  The mode increases in difficulty the longer you survive, as you’d expect.  If you can’t handle that, then skip this piece of DLC – but if you’re interested in what it offers, then definitely pick it up.

END SPOILERS!

Road of Devastation offers some extended gameplay for both novice and veteran Dead Nation players alike.  It’s an extremely challenging affair, designed to test your grit against waves of the undead.  You’ll make calculated decisions with cash you’re awarded and frantically search every dark corner for health supplies or ammo.

If Dead Nation still gets a lot of play in your gaming catalog, you should definitely pick up the DLC.  However if you’ve since retired from the Zombie Extermination Squads, you could probably pass on Road of Devastation.

Dead Nation: Road of Devastation is available on PSN for $3.99.
