ROH Music: Canon Law – Boogie Man Slam Dance

Specially chosen for Rely On Horror’s first in-depth horror music articles, Canon Law accurately translates the atmosphere I perceive from Rely on Horror: elecro-zombie jams.

Splendidly bastardized from an arm of New York City’s Crack Rock Steady family, Canon Law features members from Public Serpents (INDK, Choking Victim (whose members later formed Leftover Crack, Morning Glory, and Star Fucking Hipsters) and The Shake-Up! Unlike many of the bands just mentioned, whose main influence is announcing the filth that is society, Canon Law features an electro-horror twist. “Zombie Techno and Electro Grind-Ska”, Boogie Man Slam Dance is a perfect mixture of violent grind and groovy electro, painting macabre images of a fluorescent Night of the Living Dead and demean caricatures of Thriller, while screaming messages of social zombieism and dancing with the dead. Boogie Man Slam Dance is Canon Law’s first and last release, save a few early demos, as they broke up in early 2009 spawning DREAD DISEASE, an Electro Dance-Punk-Screaming-Happy-Party band, so-far releasing only a single unmixed track in 2009…

Starting with a classic horror intro, ‘Slam Dance quickly jumps into the circle pit. The title track kicks shit off with electro-groove accompanied with a quick beat leading into the song’s full character. At this point I can’t even stand typing and am completely brainwashed to stand up and slam-dance. In light of this, “Smash Your Television” shrieks at you to wake the fuck up. The zombie theme isn’t just for child friendliness. If you’re reading this, you’re probably a fan of zombie video games, have you ever looked into the mirror? Are you sure you’re not a zombie yourself? The cure just might not be a bullet to the brain. “The Future Will Be Microwaved” and “We’re All Dead” ponders the future of human technology microwaving our brains. Cell phones, iPads, Nintendo3DSs clouding our brain and taking away focus (literally) from the real issues in life. I’m looking at you, reader. Distraction from life is the most common from of social zombieism, it’s a commodity that every corporation wants out of you, while they control the government and world around you. “Dancing On Graves” completely bends shit around into an ironic mixture of paradise and desecration of the dead. My personal favorite track of ‘Slam Dance is “Radiation” which contains the most variation in Canon Law’s electro-groove.

Dedicated to the Victims of Japan’s recent earthquakes, tsunami, and nuclear radiation apocalypse.
Help the relief effort.

The Track ends with absolute demise. “Money For The Dead” is the darkest track on the album, reminding listeners that, when you die… you’re dead. If you feel sad about that… tough, but Canon Law understands your feelings concluding the track with a funky tropical island jam, a subtle extension of their future endeavor Dread Disease. After a long, hard day of slam-dancing a zombie needs to relax and rot on the beach.

Thanks to Kirk for all the music and content you privileged readers get to enjoy!

Rely on Horror suggests playing Canon Law over any Silent Hill game, for it changes the attitude of the game completely and greatly decreases the playing time of speed-runs. The delectable feeling of slam-hammering a Grey Child to a funky beat is both horrendously pleasing and dreadfully rewarding.

If you know of a band you think Rely On Horror would want to listen to, send a message to cbrandt@relyonhorror.com.

Keep on killin’, horror fans.
