Some games have the ability to transcend their own demise, and are granted a new life. ZombiU, apropos of its name, was raised from the dead by Ubisoft and ported to PC, PS4, and Xbox One, back in August as a digital download under the new moniker “Zombi”. Now, the once seemingly doomed franchise is hitting store shelves again.
Ubisoft is ostensibly testing the waters for a possible sequel, and good on them. The rogue-like perma-death system in ZombiU was really unique and interesting. Although, much that made ZombiU distinctive was the use of the Wii U gamepad, which unfortunately cannot be substituted on other platforms. In fact, the most fun I had with the original game was the asymmetric couch multiplayer component, which is a notable absence from the re-release.
Even with the absence of multiplayer and interesting gamepad use, the asking price of $20 is an easy pill to swallow considering the campaign will take about 12 hours to complete. Zombi is expected to hit store shelves on January 21.
