You might know these voices in The Evil Within

I’ve got good news and bad news.

On the positive, sunshiney birds-chirpety side of things, The Evil Within announced three actors who will be voicing main characters today. These actors all hold a certain amount of clout. We’ve got the long-haired, necklace wearing Anson Mount of Hell on Wheels fame who just makes me wish I hadn’t cut my long locks. He is stepping into the shoes of the main character, Sebastian Castellanos. We’ve got Jennifer Carpenter, known as Dexter’s foul-mouthed sister and that one chick who looks terrified on the cover of Quarantine. She will be Juli Kidman, Sebastian’s partner. Finally, we have Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach, new Freddy) snarling into the mic as the game’s main villain, Ruvik.

All of that sounds pretty awesome, right? They’re big enough names where they Tango Gameworks doesn’t seem to be banking on star power to drive sales. This eleventh hour reveal lends credence to this. But here’s the bad, hellfire-and-brimstone-kinda-smells-like-matches news: in between gushing about how fun the process of voice acting is, we get to hear Anson and Jennifer say some of their lines directly into the mic and hoo-doggy are they wooden-sounding.

Both of these actors are great in their TV roles, so this could be a case of them adapting to the theatre of the mind or bad directing. Yet Jackie seems to nail his lines, so I don’t know what the case is. It certainly correlates with how I felt when I first played the game. I’d rather have a convincing villain than hero so at least we’ve got that covered. And who knows? These could just be bad samples. Hopefully Jennifer will sound great in the recently announced DLC starring her character. Cross your severed fingers! Get an audible taste of the voices in the video below.
