Resident Evil Revelations Unveiled Edition was announced earlier this week. Good news if you didn’t get a chance to play the game when it first came out for the Nintendo 3DS. Also good news if you happen to own a Playstation 3 , Xbox 360, Wii U or a PC (as I’m sure most of you do). Bad news if you were hoping to play it on your Playstation Vita. Yet again, Sony’s portable console has been left out of all the fun.
Luckily, project manager Mike Lunn was on hand to assist in answering just why Resident Evil Revelations Unveiled Edition will not be brought to the Playstation Vita. Fans flocked to the official Capcom page demanding to know why. I wasn’t there with them, but I was there with them in spirit.
Hey Stargazr [the user who posed the question] when we were developing Revelations for new platforms, we really wanted to hone in on the experience you get with a large format screen, surround sound, etc. This type of setup really helps players get sucked into the horror vibe and enjoy the game to the fullest extent.
That kind of sounds like Remedy and Microsoft’s position when they cancelled Alan Wake for the PC. That some things were just made to be played on a big screen from the couch instead of sitting at a desk with a mouse and a pair of headphones on. Although it was later revealed that this cancellation was not Remedy’s decision, making the game Xbox 360 exclusive was not exactly the best choice. And yes, I understand that limiting a game to one console is quite different from excluding it from one console.
3DS and PS Vita infrastructure let alone developing games for them are extremely different beasts. Even just the screens as you mention [from another question] are completely different resolutions/functions.
But PS3 and 3DS infrastructure are the same? Xbox 360 structure and PS3 structure and PC structure are the same? Is one a remastered edition and the rest just ports of that? That’s puzzling, but only half as puzzling when you consider how Lunn responds to the same poster’s question regarding why the game is worth $49.99.
Fantastic survival horror campaign, upgraded RAID mode, new costumes completely redone HD visuals, new characters to play as, new skills, new customization parts, new enemies, more challenging difficulty modes, reduced/optimized loading, enemy/item positioning is now random, RE.net integration and unlockables, etc. This is definitely not a simple port as some may imagine 🙂
So if the visuals are completely redone, wouldn’t that negate the fact that the resolutions are different? I guess it’s finally time to quash that Resident Evil PSP rumour, because it doesn’t look like it’s happening any time soon.
