“Sane and insane could easily switch places if the insane were to become the majority.”
This quote from John Carpenter’s In The Mouth of Madness comes to mind when looking over the Kickstarter page for Compulsion Games’ We Happy Few, a new survival game set in a dystopian world where the majority of people are high on a drug called Joy. Joy is consumed like a snack, and as a result the citizens of Wellington Wells are all overly cheerful and, frankly, weird. Set in the 60s, the world of We Happy Few is vibrant but ominous. Set sometime after a terrible event in the town’s history, its citizens have opted to sedate themselves with Joy to forgo the pain of reality, and anyone that doesn’t follow along are deemed “Downers” and a threat to the peace.
We Happy Few is survival roguelike with a procedurally generated world and multiple biomes. Players will take control of various character with their own unique attributes and stories. As a “Downer” and member of the anti-Joy resistance, players must avoid suspicion, uncover secrets, and craft tools and weapons to help them escape Wellington Wells. Stealth mechanics includes putting on a happy face to blend in. If you’re caught, a bunch of smiling people beat you to death. Yay!
Compulsion Games is looking for CA$250,000 ($200,353) to fund development for a PC release. The game is currently a fourth way to its goal. Console versions are planned fir release after PC if the team meets their goal.
