VGA Bit Coverage

It’s been a pretty intense lead up to this year’s VGAs.  What was once something that a lot of gamers might have shunned away from is now something they’re clamouring to watch.  If you didn’t watch, why not?  It’s not like other people in your house are going to make fun because you’re a gamer – they already know that.  So why not celebrate the fact in all its glory?

This is just a really basic blog as to what’s going on.  Apologies in advance for the formatting.  Keep refreshing the page to get the most updated post.

It’s difficult to pick out what relates to horror-gaming, so we’re going to do our best anyway.   Arkham City is first on the docket with a reveal date set for Autumn 2011 and fresh videos.   There’s a lot of Batman putting the hurt on some baddies in what looks like a city gone wild.  Intense.  Meanwhile someone else is pressing a victim for information. for information.  An open world game.  Take a look at the video.

Studio of the Year

–Bioware

Game designer Todd Howard is speaking about working on their next epic piece with Bethesda.  World premiere of ELDER SCROLLS 5 – SKYRAM, due date 11/11/11.

Mortal Kombat PS3 Exclusive.  Sub Zero and Scorpion duking it out for the crowd.  Kratos enters the ring.  Nice!

(I can’t think of her name and didn’t hear it) from 90210 fame announces the World Premiere of  THOR – GOD OF THUNDER

“Legend tells of a hammer, embued with the powers of a storm.  Legend says only one can wield it….”    May 3rd.  Initial impressions almost look a bit like a God of War clone.  “almost.”  But when someone does something right, it’s really hard ‘not’ to want to make your game right too, no?

Best Action Game of the Year

–Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

Denise Richards is onstage giving us the lead-in to My Chemical Romance.  Personally not a fan of Planetary Go, but the crowd is loving it.  Then talking about trash-talking on Xbox live….awesome….Then going through another addition to the Game of the Year nominations.  First was Black Ops, now it’s Mass Effect 2.

World premiere – Bioware’s next blockbuster game.  In conjunction with EA.  Things look grim, an English soldier is talking about how many people have died in the first short while while taking refuge in a hollowed out building.  “Don’t know what they are, what they want, or where they came from.”    There won’t be an earth left to save in MASS EFFECT 3. Due for release Holiday next year.

Best Shooter

–Call of Duty – Black Ops

Next world premiere.  It’s the 1950s, but not ‘our’ 1950s.  In this 1950s, civilization has fallen to the Chimera in RESISTANCE 3.  On a boat out at sea – the ship’s crew take up arms against the onslaught.  Sheeit…Words can’t explain this trailer and promotional vid…so watch it here.  Due for release September 6 next year.

A new Character of the Year nominee, John Marston.  Adding to the list of Kratos and Ezio.  And I want the Black Ops Jeep that’s been advertised throughout the entire show and for the last…several months.  Frank Woods is also added to the list.

Best Performance by a Human Male

–Neil Patrick Harris

Tony Hawk announces the next world premiere from Activision and Radical Entertainment – Prototype 2.  To kill a monster, you must become one.  Alex Mercer is in for a world of hurt come 2012.  But according to some…so are all of us :\

Halfway through the show, my hands are starting to get a little sore from typing, erasing, and finding the videos.  A nice little intermission commercial is in order.  And here it is, they’re going to talk about phones for a little while.  And…chickens?

Del Toro is onstage discussing the next world premiere.  Lots of swearing that’s being censored out.  Del Toro admits being an avid gamer just before telling us we’ll shit in our pants.  A descent into madness, a tiny taste of craziness.  THQ and Volition present a new terror from Guillermo Del Toro, INSANE, coming 2013.  EEP, looks downright awesome to me.

Oh, and there’s also THIS!

Best Independent Game

–Limbo

Most Anticipated Game of 2011 as Voted on SpikeTV.com

–Portal 2

Best Driving Game

–Need for Speed Hot Pursuit

Best Adapted Game

–Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Best Soundtrack

–DJ Hero 2

Best RPG

–Mass Effect 2

Best Music Game

–Rock Band 3

Apologies for any errors there, as the announcements seemed to whip by really quickly.  Kind of like they realized “oh shit, we’re running out of time here” and just decided to spiel out a bunch of awards at once.  Or these might have been what was voted on at spiketv.com.  Anyhow,  a nice video and music from Red Dead Redemption so we can just think on how awesome the game is.  Have you played it?  It’s awesome.  Go play it.  Or at least listen to the soundtrack.  Absolutely incredible.

World Premeire – Forza Motorsport 4.  Never been much into racing games, so you’re going to have to wait for the trailer to be posted.  Looks pretty damned intense, coming Fall 2011.

I’d like to take a quick commercial break to thank VGtrailers, because as you can clearly see, that’s where all the videos are coming from.  Thanks vgtrailers, you guys rock.

Next World Premiere – SSX – Deadly Descents. Honestly, does not look like a snowboarding game at the beginning of the trailer, but once you get to the snowboarding part it’s pretty clear.  The game uses real-world locations for its levels.  Pretty nice.

Character of the Year

Sgt. Woods

We already knew this, but there’s a nice little piece on Uncharted 3. I’ve never played Uncharted, but I was invited to the Uncharted 2 multiplayer beta.  But if you follow VG news at all, you’ll know that Uncharted 3 – Drake’s Deception was leaked a few days ago.  The trailer can readily be found online.  The dreamers of today are dangerous men indeed.  Uncharted 3’s due date is 11/01/11.

Game of the Year

–Red Dead Redemption

Aww, yeah!  Red Dead Redemption took home a bunch of awards this time out (yet somehow…weren’t announced in the show?  Definitely didn’t account for the time it would take to announce all these awards…grr) including Best DLC for Undead Nightmare, best original score and best song.  So there you have it.  Play RDR.

There are other awards on the site which weren’t announced in the show.  We’ll be bringing you important updates as they become available.  As for me, I think I’m going to go ice my hands for a little while…ouch.

UPDATE

So it appears that Spike pretty much forgot (or purposely left out) the rest of the awards.  You know, the fact that it’s an ‘awards show’ should have really clued them in.  After a bit of snooping around, we were able to get the complete list of award-winners.  So here goes….

Best Xbox 360 Game – Mass Effect 2

Best Ps3 Game – God of War 3

Best Wii Game – Super Mario Galaxy 2

Best PC Game – Starcraft 2 Wings of Libery

Best Handheld Game – God of War – Ghost of Sparta

Best Individual Sports Game – Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11

Best Multiplayer Game – Halo: Reach

Best Team Sports Game – NBA 2k11

Best Song in a Game – Far Away (Red Dead Redemption)

Best Graphics – God of War 3

Best Downloadabe Game – Costume Quest

Best DLC – Red Dead Redemption -Undead Nightmare

Sorry guys, not a single word on a new Resident Evil, Silent Hill, L4D or other similar title.  In fact, the only horror title that was even mentioned was Insane, and that was a pretty small bit – and it also won’t be out until 2013!  You ‘could’ categorize Prototype and Arkham City in there…if you wanted.
