Ballistic Moon, the developer behind the upcoming remake of Until Dawn, has reportedly laid off several employees just weeks before the game’s scheduled release on October 4th.
At least two former employees have confirmed their departures on LinkedIn. Cassy Cornish, a Junior Game Designer, shared their experience, stating, “Like many others in this wonderful but turbulent industry, I am sadly being made redundant from my role at Ballistic Moon.”
Similarly, Harry Williams, a Technical Designer who had been with the studio for two years, also announced their redundancy on LinkedIn. Williams expressed gratitude for their time at the company, saying:
After two exciting years working on the wonderful Until Dawn 2024 at Ballistic Moon, I am unfortunately being made redundant. I’ve loved working with everyone at BM and hope I cross paths with members of that family in future projects.
The broader context of these layoffs is significant, as 2024 has proven to be a particularly challenging year for the gaming industry. Over 11,500 industry professionals have lost their jobs this year alone, surpassing the 10,500 layoffs recorded throughout 2023. This wave of job losses underscores the industry’s volatile nature, even as studios work on high-profile projects.
Today, September 3rd, 2024, Ballistic Moon confirmed the layoffs in a statement on LinkedIn. The studio attributed the decision to the ongoing challenges facing the industry, stating:
It is with a heavy heart that we must scale down our team to secure the future of our studio, following the development of Until Dawn for PS5 and PC.
The statement continued, expressing the studio’s deep regret and acknowledging the impact this difficult decision has had on their employees and their families. “We want to express our sincere gratitude to every team member for their hard work, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Ballistic Moon. Saying goodbye to such a talented and passionate group of people is incredibly difficult.”
Despite the restructuring, Ballistic Moon emphasized its commitment to supporting the upcoming launch of Until Dawn and expressed optimism about exploring new opportunities and collaborations in the future.
