Woah, talk about out of left field! Well, not really. The Tekken franchise has a pretty long history with bizarre guest characters, with choices like Gon (a dinosaur from a manga by the same name) in Tekken 3 and more recently Noctis Lucis Caelum (from Final Fantasy 15). Regardless, fans were totally taken aback when Negan, one of the primary villains from the popular horror comic and most recently television series The Walking Dead, was announced as a guest fighter for season 2 of Tekken 7‘s DLC roster at this year’s EVO. This is somehow his first appearance in a video game, despite there being plenty of Walking Dead games. While his announcement in the trailer is short (and features no in-game footage), it has certainly riled up a lot of excitement and interest as to how he’ll look and play. For me, I’m definitely hoping that Jeffery Dean Morgan (who portrays Negan in the show) will repise his voice and lend his likeness. It’s always kind of lame when a licensed video game can’t secure a recognizable face and voice and instead has to make something up (like David Tapp in Saw: The Videogame, or Max Rockatansky in Mad Max). While there is some audio in the trailer, it’s hard to tell if it’s Morgan or not.
Regardless, it’s fun to have a little horror sprinkled in to this legendary fighting series. Intentional horror, anyway. Skip to the 2:30 mark to see Negan’s reveal.
