Tsui Hark to assist in production of Alice: Otherlands

Tsui Hark

Tsui Hark, a Chinese film director who has produced roughly 60 movies and TV series, has agreed to help American McGee in the production of the Alice: Otherlands shorts, which are currently raising funds via Kickstarter.

In a post on the the Kickstarter page, McGee explained why he didn’t fully enjoy Tim Burton’s take on a mature Alice in Wonderland movie; he stated that he wanted Alice to have a more prominent role, whereas, in Tim’s movie, she was more like a prop that happened to get involved in all the events around her. To this end, he has brought the popular director on board. I won’t pretend to be an expert on the field of Chinese action movies, but I know IMDb well enough to understand this man is kind of a big deal.

Tsui himself stated in the update that: “Alice wanders in the eye-boggling fantasy land. The madness and violence reveal the inner power of a teenager fighting in a hypocrite world of the adult villains. I can already see the impact of the story as a movie. I’d be more than enthusiastic to participate in any effort to make it possible for Alice to come alive on the big screen. I’d join the team to make this project a wonderful success.”

With 13 days left on the clock, the fundraiser is about 50% done. Will Alice make it? Only time will tell.
