The Walking Dead teaser trailer, more information revealed

With The Walking Dead season 2 behind us (did you watch it?), many fans of the series are either waiting til the next issue comes out, or counting down the days til fall when Season 3 begins.  Lucky for us, Telltale Games seeks to add some more TWD goodness to our lives.

In an exclusive interview with IGN on the Up at Noon program, story consultant and writer Gary Whitta revealed the trailer for the upcoming game.  It’s short and sweet, with just enough info to keep us interested.  The video actually contains spoilers for other games, so if you’re looking to get straight to the good stuff, skip to 8:56.  If you don’t feel like looking, we’ve got a brief run-down.

For those TWD fans who were a little disappointed with the television adaptation of the graphic novel, fear not.  The Walking Dead video game is not an adaptation of the television show.  However, it’s a rather liberal adaptation of the graphic novel.  That is, it’s set in the same universe, at around the same time and place, but revolving around different, new characters.  Old characters from the graphic novel and show might have a bit part (probably as a corpse) but will not appear in major roles.

The lead character in the video game is named Lee – a man who is pretty much the opposite of Rick Grimes.  Lee has been convicted of murdering his wife and is on his way to prison when the infection breaks out.  A boy scout he’s definitely not, but there are probably more important matters than an appeal at hand.  Either way, he seems to be taking pretty good care of the little girl tagging along with him.  I mean she’s not dead – or a walker.  And he’s not letting her out of his sight – see?

Finally! Someone that knows how to watch a kid!

The game appears to have the same charming art style as previous Telltale games – not too gritty, but not entirely a cartoon, either.  Seeing as how TWD is initially a graphic novel, this particular art style seems pretty fitting.  But just because that’s the style of animation doesn’t mean the thing won’t be gruesome.  Whitta ensures that there are some pretty disgusting scenes – things that even the staff felt uncomfortable putting in the game and that it definitely earns the mature rating that it’s received.  The game will deal with the player making “agonizing moral choices.”

We admit, we’re eager to find out what exactly Whitta is referring to.  We won’t have to wait too long, as the first of the five episodes is set to release next month.  Check back for more information on The Walking Dead video game as it becomes available.
