With the success of Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead: The Game (Season 1), and with all the GOTY talk going on about it, it’s easy to forget that there’s actually another The Walking Dead game in development. This one is a little more “expected” as far as video games with zombies go.
Terminal Reality is currently hard at work on The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, published by Activision, which is due sometime in 2013 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Yes, Activision. “Will it be a shooter?” I hear you ask. Well, yes, it will be.
Terminal Reality’s Creative Director, Drew Haworth posted some information about the game today on the PlayStation Blog. He spoke about how the game is all about Daryl and focuses on telling his story from the beginning of the outbreak up to when he meets up with Shane’s group of survivors, while Rick is in a coma of course. Drew promises that they’ll be staying true to the TV series, depicting Daryl as close to his small screen version as possible, they even have the character’s actor Norman Reedus voicing him in the game, marking his video game debut. Yup, Survival Instinct won’t be set in Robert Kirkman’s comic book universe like Telltale’s game was, it’ll instead be based directly off of AMC’s TV series.
It’s not hard to imagine that we’ll be taking down way more zombies here than we did in Telltale’s first season of The Walking Dead, but will it retain that strong focus on choice that that series was so successful with? We’re not entirely sure yet, but Drew does state that “players will have the opportunity to meet some interesting characters and have a hand in deciding their fate.” Have a hand in deciding their fate, eh? Interesting. And speaking of hand…
Merle Dixon will also be in the game, though he won’t be voiced by Michael Rooker sadly. While Daryl is a squirrel-throwing, ear-collecting badass, he’s quite a nice guy under all that badassery (is that a word?). Merle on the other hand is anything but. So it’ll be very interesting to see the brothers’ dynamic and their story unfold in the game. And speaking of which, I hope we get to see the brothers reuinted this Sunday for the mid-season finale of season 3! But anyway, back to the game…
We really haven’t seen any substantial amount of gameplay footage thus far, but that will soon change. Responding to a user comment on his blog post, Drew states: “We’re just getting ready to show some things so keep an eye out next month!” So, December it is!
