Asylums – one of the most overused horror cliches known to us. Ahh, crazy people! It’s tired and offensive; when media approaches the theme of mental illness for the sake of a few scares, it’s hard to get excited and expect anything more than continued stigmatization. But maybe the recently greenlit game, The Town of Light, will be a little different.
Developed by Italian studio LKA.it, The Town of Light is said to be inspired by real events and a real asylum in Italy. The studio has designed their game around this asylum and hope to tell the story of its patients that were unfairly treated there. They have also gathered testimonies from former employees and patients as well as quote “authorized” inspections of the asylum itself. Gotta admire the hustle.
The Town of Light is being designed as a psychological horror game about the mistreatment of patients with mental illness and not about fearing them. The game’s trailer is narrated by someone describing what they were subjected to during their stay in the asylum, and it appears we’ll learn her story.
A game about the more heinous medical practices conducted is a turn from what we usually see. Color me interested. The Town of Light has been Greenlit on Steam recently and is said to release in the first quarter of 2015.
