The next generation of consoles is rapidly approaching. We’re already into the Wii U’s lifecycle (as struggling as it may be), and we’ll soon have our hands on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Personally,I’m going to hold off on the Xbox One. Nothing’s coming out exclusively on the platform that really grabs my attention. Dead Rising 3, maybe, but I don’t see it as a system-seller type of game. PlayStation 3 on the other hand…Well, I won’t go into my excitement for that system in this post!
This is all about MercurySteam’s grand finale to their fantastic Castlevania: Lords of Shadow trilogy, Lords of Shadow 2. At one point, the team did think about making a next-generation version of their already beautiful-looking game. But they opted instead to stick to the engine they were already working with, and not have to start from scratch. Covering this topic in a recent talk with Videogamer at Gamescom, the game’s producer Dave Cox had this to say:
“So I think when the next-gen consoles got announced we did think about it, but then we said we don’t really have to start again. We’d already gotten so far down the line we just thought, this is the path we’ve set for ourselves, let’s do it.
“We want this to be one of the last great current-gen titles. That’s what we wanted to do. We want to go out with a bang. We want to end the Lords of Shadows series with a bang.”
This mentality brings to mind God of War 2’s release and how despite the PlayStation 3 already being out by that time, the game’s developer stayed true to what they already had and decided to close out the PlayStation 2 era with a bang.
Dave Cox goes on to state how this engine they have for Lords of Shadow 2 has really enabled his team to fix the issues players had with the first game, namely the fixed camera angle and frame-rate.
I’m confident the team will definitely put in all they have into this game, making sure their trilogy ends on the highest note possible. And it doesn’t hurt to say this one more time, but with the current console generation rapidly coming to an end, the original Lords of Shadow still stands as my favorite game from this generation.
