The MISSING, the latest game from Deadly Premonition and D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die creator Hidetaka Suehiro, is getting closer to its October 11 release date. To celebrate the occasion, publisher Arc System Works has released a new trailer that shows off more of the game than ever before.
Though clocking in at just over a minute, the launch trailer for The MISSING: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories sure does pack a lot in it. We get a look at the main conceit of the game, wherein players control J.J. in a surreal and atmospheric quest to find her missing friend Emily. We also get to hear some of the first dialogue released in the game, which definitely gets spooky quick.
In previous trailers we’ve seen a few bits of gameplay, including the fact that J.J. can sacrifice bits of her body during gameplay to continue her quest. The launch trailer gives us a bigger look at the world and set pieces of The MISSING, including some nightmarish clock towers and…a moose doctor standing in a field of glowing flowers? Murderous giant toy monkeys and flying whales further punctuate the bizarre scenery, making it absolutely clear that this is a Swery joint.
Like Deadly Premonition before it, The MISSING looks to be an incredibly surreal horror show that might not be for everyone. But with Swery’s trademark style and the continued popularity of games like Limbo and Inside, perhaps it could appeal to a wider audience. We’ll know soon enough, as The MISSING debuts on Playstation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch on October 11.
