Atmosphere is one of the most important aspects of an effective horror game, and judging by some newly-released gameplay footage, indie sci-fi/horror title The Hum has atmosphere like a hive has bees.
The game, from Argentina-based developer Thotwise, aspires to make you “rethink many basic facts on your life, experience and beliefs” as you traverse through the husk of a world ravaged by alien creatures. The Hum runs on Unreal Engine 4, and god damn does it make great use of the new engine’s strengths. The new trailer, comprised entirely of in-engine footage, utilizes eerie lighting effects and subtle musical cues that wouldn’t seem out of place in a David Fincher movie, all building towards an end which has very intriguing implications for where the game’s plot may end up.
The Hum unfortunately failed its attempt at crowdfunding earlier this year, but fear not, as the developer has announced that they’ll be giving it another shot in the near-future. With any luck, The Hum should release mid-2015 for PC, Mac, Linux, and PS4 (provided that it meets its funding requirements, that is).
