The Horror Games of E3 2011: Silent Hill: Downpour

In our continued countdown to E3 2011, we continue to cover the horror games we’re excited to see at the event. Next up on the table is the highly promising Silent Hill: Downpour!

Silent Hill: Downpour is one of the most anticipated horror games of 2011, but for many also one of the most uncertain. Silent Hill has been a mixed bag for the fans in recent years after Silent Hill 3, with people either loving or hating the titles that came after them and the titles not published by Team Silent (the people who made Silent Hill 1-4). Hopefully Downpour will be the game to change this; it is being developed by the fairly new game studio, Vatra Games, and the ideas and work behind it look very promising! The game aims to be the largest Silent Hill, both in terms of the game world and length to complete it, supposedly lasting players around 10 hours for completion without doing the many side quest and multiple choices Vatra has left for players. They have worked to create their own unique version of Silent Hill and have spent a lot of time studying on what makes a good Silent Hill game and what makes a bad one. A list of features we have heard about since it’s reveal is a bigger choice system, more open environments with more to do in them, some interesting puzzles, the return of Puzzle Difficulty settings, some rather creepy-sounding moments and surreal moments to get really caught up in, a focus on using items in the environment for combat such as chairs, optional areas to visit such as the subway system where you travel deserted train tunnels where deadlier monsters roam but it can let you navigate the city faster… There are a lot of cool ideas here, and much more for us to learn about of the game. To say we here at Rely on Horror are very intrigued and excited by this title is an understatement.

But what can we expect of this game at E3? Well the developers for 500,000 Facebook fans gave us a little treat and tease for the upcoming E3 content you can see below:

This looks like an expanded demo of something the media got to play earlier this year. There might be more content to it or expanded areas, but I think it would be pretty reasonable to expect the demo on show to maybe be the same as the demo that they showed off earlier this year to the media, especially considering everything in that teaser looks like areas and sections that were described of this demo. The demo is supposed to start at the beginning of the game before our hero, Murphy Pendleton, even gets into Silent Hill. His journey see’s him escaping from a prison transport vehicle that crashes off the road and being on the run from a cop. He winds up in a small town right outside Silent Hill where he needs to get a key and ticket for a Sky Tram into a gorge that sits next to southeastern part of Silent Hill. It includes a creepy house with a few skeletons in it’s basement, a restaurant transforming into a surreal nightmare world (included with a fog-like monsters, turning the world on it’s side to rush down on the slushing water while avoiding deathly fans like a deadly slide, and enlarged objects from the restaurant with included puzzles), and having to beat an arcade game before a room floods and drowns you. Besides the demo, we also are expecting a trailer, some gameplay (maybe a demonstration of an area of the game by a Vatra representative?), and definitely them to let the lid off a bit more on some of the features of the game. There have been minor updates, but with the game coming out later this year we likely also will get word on a possible release date at E3.

No matter the case, we’re pumped to see more from this game and we’ll definitely be able to bring you live coverage of the Konami event and see if we can take any videos if they’ll allow us to do so. We’ll continue bringing news on this game as it comes, definitely one for horror fans to keep their eyes on.
