The Horror Games of E3 2011: BioShock Infinite

A healthy two-for-one dose today, Bioshock Infinite is a title we have been teased about for E3 2011. What do we expect to see of this levitated twist on the Bioshock universe?

We’re not going to be seeing this release of this game until next year, and with the current spacing between updates (and the fact there is so much horror game buzz lately), it can make this title slip the mind… For now. But things are shaping up nicely for this spiritual prequel. Besides the new setting, the developers have taken the time to expand the choice morale that was found in the first game briefly and let it include moment-by-moment choices as well as that of morale and gain. Instead of a nearly desolate and abandoned city, we have a lush and full of activity metropolis that is on the brink of it’s possible destruction. There have been additions to the combat, such as Sky-Lines, roller coaster-like rails that you can connect with to fight airborne, and Tears, breaks in the fabric of reality to pull items from. We also are introduced to characters with background and relationships with each other, where even the giant mechanical birds have feelings.

Irrational Games have been kind to tease what we’ll be seeing at E3 of this title, and have showcased to the media the demo that will be on the floor there. We already detailed the demo when we talked about yesterday, but it’s presence at E3 could quite possibly be playable (as the one presented recently was played by a representative of the game rather than the press). If so, we’re sure we’ll at least get a few gameplay videos of it. We also are expecting a media blow-out for the game. Likely we will get to feast our eyes on a new trailer, possibly to follow up the original teaser trailer, and many images, as well as information, to savor. We also expect them to be fairly limited in what they show off… Media from one or two locations or sections of the game, and more of a showcase of these same areas rather than talk much about the story besides the set-up and basics of it. The game’s release is still a bit distant and they will most certainly have some more media blowouts before it’s release, whenever that is.

However, this might also mark when more information on the game may come more regularly. This means, rather than having months between information updates, we would receive an update or two a month to feed us up until it’s release. While some might be a bit weirded out by the contrast of the this title with the last couple Bioshocks (the brightness, set in the air, the more liveliness), we are excited for this game and it’s different take and almost Steampunk-like approach that expands their universe and the story Irrational Games want to tell. It sounds like they are really expanding what they accomplished in the first game and are adding new features to keep it fresh, interesting, and unique. The original was fantastic, the second game was alright but lacked a lot of the charm and novelty, but with the developers of the original working on this and brining something completely new to the table, we’re excited to visit this city of Colombia and be whisked away on a thrilling narrative with exciting gameplay. We will kindly keep you updated on this game and it’s whereabouts at E3 2011 in a couple of weeks.
