Asymmetrical multiplayer is a concept that has become quite popular lately. Essentially, it means that not all participants in the game have the same goals and options at their disposal during play; imagine a basic example like a group of players are zombies and another group of players are survivors that must make it through a level. While the Wii U is currently the best place to find such content, especially if you recall the excellent ZombiU multiplayer mode, there are plenty of examples to be found elsewhere and The Flock might be a particularly interesting one.
In the game, players are turned into monsters that must acquire an artifact. Once a player obtains it, however, they are turned into a different creature that can use the artifact as a flashlight. If they can hold the item for a certain amount of time, then they win the game, so the players who are still monsters must hunt the “carrier” down. The downside for them is that light hurts them unless they stand perfectly still, so they are kind of like the boo from Mario games that can’t move while observed.
The game is being developed by a Dutch studio called “Vogelsap” and is now in closed-beta. Those interested in trying the game out can sign up via the link in the source.
