The Evil Within looks like it’s going to be a pretty gory game. I mean just look at any trailer or image and you’re going to see some serious blood and gore. So it should come as no surprise that there’s talk of censoring it.
During an interview with Famitsu, ZeniMax Asia general manager Tetsu Takahashi revealed that in Japan the game will receive a CERO D rating, which is essentially an M rating in North America. But Japan tends to shy away from heavy gore in games, censoring games to remove decapitations in Resident Evil 4, removing blood from Resistance: Fall of Man and Uncharted and toned down gore in Gears of War. So a game like The Evil Within is definitely going to have some issue. Takahashi also stated that the game will have some of its content removed at retail release. All is not lost though, as the censored portions will be available to Japanese players through DLC, allowing them to see the game in all it’s bloody, gory, glory.
There’s no word yet whether this extra bit of DLC will come at a cost and hopefully it won’t. I understand that games get censored – it’s a thing that has happened for about as long as controversial subject matter in games has existed. I also understand that what would be considered acceptable in North America would differ to what would be in (in this instance) Japan. But I can say without hesitation that it would be a hard pill to swallow if companies got the idea that they could get away with charging for mature content in games.
