There is no doubt a plethora of classic PC gaming fans out there who have been waiting with baited breath for a new System Shock game. The franchise’s influence is still felt to this day (BioShock anyone?), so it gives us great pleasure to tell you that a new teaser trailer has just been unveiled for Nightdive Studios‘ remake. It’s quite something.
About the teaser video itself: fans of the previous game will recognise some of the aesthetics and gameplay mechanics. The opening few seconds are chock full of science fiction horror goodness. Less than a minute in, things get kind of…trippy. Like something out of a Kubrick film, the player is spirited along into CYBERSPACE. It’s not too dissimilar to a popular sci-fi film who’s name rhymes with “Bron”. It’s also quote reminiscent of the training sequences in the opening moments of System Shock 2, and it’s got that retro-futuristic look to it with lots of neon colours to boot.
It’s a bit of a far cry from what gamers expect from the series, but it’s likely that this is just showing off some of the different aspects that will make it more than just a bog-standard remake.
Nightdive Studios has kind of made a name for themselves over the years with remasters of already popular retro games, such as SiN, Turok, and for the Enhanced Edition of the first System Shock. Their Steam page says they “will keep the new game true to the classic experience, keeping all the things you loved while giving today’s gamers the modern look and feel expected from a AAA title,” so hopefully there will be something there for old fans and newcomers.
Currently there is no set date for when it will be released, but you can pre-order it right now. Anyway, we’ve waffled on enough. Enjoy the video.
