Survive with a friend in Don’t Starve Together

Multiplayer is coming to tough-as-nails survivalish horrorish Don’t Starve. In this post on Klei Entertainment’s forums, the team explains their sudden new stance on adding the ability to play with others. Originally, the developers said they would never add multiplayer and instead wanted to focus on creating the ” best singleplayer game that they could”. Now, however, they’ve made additions to their team and have deemed network play the next big step. And so it was that they set out to create Don’t Starve Together.

Though nothing is set in stone, there are a few promising details to be extracted here. Right now, Klei Entertainment is aiming for 2-4 players, but if they can make it work, even more will be supported. Public and private games will be available, allowing you to set up games with friends or try your hand at meeting some fancy strangers on the internet. The core game should function similarly to the standard Don’t Starve experience, though there may be new content, and stats and items will definitely have to be rebalanced. If you don’t like the sound of all of this and want to keep the singleplayer mode’s sanctity intact, know that singleplayer will remain unaffected by all of this.

This expansion will be free to all owners of the game. After it is added, the price of the game will go from $14.99 to $19.99. As far as a release date, Summer 2014 is as specific as we can get right now. All this applies to the Steam and Standalone PC versions of the game right now. Hopefully a PS4 version will be developed afterwards. With the help of my girlfriend, I might actually be able to see the end of Don’t Starve‘s bleak world.
