Suda51 talks about Shadows of the Damned 2 (April Fool’s)

We loved Shadows of the Damned, a 2011 action-survival game that was developed by Grasshopper Studios and Suda51 along with Shinji Mikami, the father of Resident Evil and director of Resident Evil 4. Unfortunately it sold abysmally despite critical success, and it looked like we may never hear from Garcia Fucking Hotspur again… Until recently, when Akira Yamaoka, sound designer previously of the Silent Hill series and Shadows of the Damned, said he was thinking of a sequel with EA. We’ve been cautiously optimistic about the news, but today EA has passed around to some select press a mysterious dev diary. Its release isn’t scheduled until later this month, but we’ve got the juicy details for you all to savor in the mean time.

Suda51 sits in a creative stage set with strage projected shadows, what appears to be a snow-themed area, with a painted haunting but wonderfully twisted lodge on the backdrop. Heads are littered about, pierced by fake stalagmites. An interesting change of pace in terms of environments from the first game, but the set-up reminds one of the dev diaries for Shadows of the Damned. And sure enough, as Suda51 begins to speak, a dubbed voice-over talks in his place.

“I am Goichi Suda, and I want you all to taste my big boner!!”

We cut to some gameplay clips, the first of which shows Garcia taking Johnson and shoving it down a slender and scarred maniquin-looking enemy while pulling it out and pushing the gun back down it’s throat repeatedly, getting faster and faster until the enemy’s head literally explodes. We see Garcia in some dark cabin full of flickering lights as some giant shadowy monster gives chase with a ridiculously-large crescent-shaped chainsaw; crazily giving chase while scraping the chainsaw against the sides of the wall and swinging it around wildly. We also see, surprisingly, a scene that looks playable of Garcia driving his motorcycle through a locale that will look familiar to players of the first game, crashing after a strange crimson limousine. We go back to Suda51 as he talks some about the first game, and what’s to come.

“Shadows of the Damned was a thrilling project to work on. It took many years, and we had so much fun working on it!…But it didn’t sell well at all. But we now have more experience, and fan feedback to work to make a game that’s broader, grander, and more over-the-topped than ever before!” He mentions how they have Akira Yamaoka and Shinji Mikami on board again, but two new faces are also joining the dream team. “We are proud to introduce Keisuke Kikuchi and Takafumi Fujisawa!” These are the fathers and directors of Fatal Frame 1 & 2, and Forbidden Siren 1 & 2. Very unexpected!’

“We want Shadows of the Damned to be the ultimate horror-comedy experience. Players should laugh, cry, and shit themselves while playing this game.” He talks more about some improvements, such as New Game +, selectable chapters, a longer campaign, reworked and improved gunplay and mechanics, better graphics (which do look like quite a step-up from the first game from the few clips of gameplay we see), and more features and details to be announced soon.

Call us excited! For all of those who haven’t, we recommend Shadows of the Damned. I never thought I’d say this, but I can’t wait to taste that big boner!
