Rebellion Developments has given us some lovely tidbits and walkthroughs surrounding Strange Brigade since its announcement last year. Their latest trailer does not disappoint, with its narrator utilized to great effect to establish the setting, environments, characters, enemies, weapons, and magic you’ll employ throughout the game. This third-person exploration, puzzle solving, trap-laden game is set in 1930s Egypt. The game looks rife for endless possibilities for both single-player and multiplayer co-op styles.
Now, let’s delve into the game’s plot. The witch Queen Seteki unleashes her multitudes of mummies, teleporting ghouls, skeletal pirates, fire breathers, minotaurs, and towering Anubis warriors to reestablish her Empire by any means necessary. Which is where—the secret organization the Strange Brigade gathers—and comes in with its magic abilities and physical weapons to stop the carnage in Northern Africa (and without their interference, the globe).
This game looks like it’s going to be a hoot to play with worthwhile multiple play-throughs to get all collectibles, such as gems that increase your healing factor or attach to weapons for all kinds of fun results. For example, bullets that freeze and shatter enemies. Speaking of fun for all ages, there’s also a ‘score attack mode’ which allows you to mix speed and style for all kinds of goodies and a horde mode that throws all of the enemies at you that you can (or cannot) handle. We’ll see how the physics engine works in real-time when all those mummies and ghouls are rushing at you. I’m seriously praying for no glitches or sluggish frame rates; though I suppose I’ll have that answer in a few weeks. There are all the trappings of a grand adventure here. Tombs, portals to far away locales, and airships to parachute from. See? Fun for the whole family.
Everyone can choose from their favorite mode of play with four playable characters. Frank Fairburne is your guns and sharpshooting expert. In contrast, Gracie Braithwaite is your go-to explosives expert and close quarter combatant. If magic is more up your alley, Professor Archimedes de Quincy is your man. Lastly, Nalangu Rushida seems to be well versed in all areas, with lightning-quick sprinting abilities, 6th sense reflexes, and the power to drain life from her enemies. The developers really wanted Nalangu to shine. She is the face of a lot of the promotional materials so, there’s that. Her comrades are not defenseless, however. Each of them (Nalangu included) have access to amulets that have a total of 16 powers but must be distributed four a piece to each member of your party. These amulets are going to be incredibly satisfying in dealing destruction to the baddies that are relentlessly pursuing you.
Overall, Strange Brigade looks like an enjoyable game that’s had a lot of time and effort poured into it. To ring in the ghoulish Fall season, the game’s release date is set for August 28, 2018.
