State of Decay has been a breath of fresh air for a lot of zombie apocalypse afficionados out there, with it’s sandbox gameplay and unique twist on this specific genre. Something the general populace often felt that State of Decay was lacking in, was the absence of co-op gameplay. Many turned to Undead Labs, voicing their desire for co-op to be implemented and the developers have spent weeks trying to work with Microsoft on this, as well as other plans for the game.
Today, however, the developers of State of Decay officially came out with statements on the co-op situation. Undead Labs revealed that while they have been working hard to come up with a solution to implement co-op, the costs and time required to do so are simply out of the company’s reach. Development times would stretch up to 6 months at the very best, and a lot of the game’s features would have to be revamped from the core. The company would also be understaffed, meaning that other aspects of the game (such as DLC, patches, customer support and future sequels) would suffer.
Undead Labs, however, thank their devoted supporters for providing feedback, support and appreciation for State of Decay, and encourage everyone to stay tuned for more announcements about the game, stating that they “have only just started.”
As a player of this game, I find it really disheartening to hear this news, as I had been looking forward to cracking some zombie skulls in the company of friends. Nonetheless, I understand Undead Labs’ decision and appreciate the fact that they are honest and direct, and could give us a definitive answer on the co-op question so quickly. I suppose us fans of the series will have to stay patient, as future sequels may very well be co-op oriented!
