The Last of Us was the victim of much hype leading up to its big reveal at the VGAs on Saturday night. Gamers were already filled to the brim with excitement, eager to learn exactly what type of game this PlayStation 3 exclusive would be. So you can imagine the ovation the big reveal trailer got on Saturday night. Once the Naughty Dog logo went up on the screen, we knew, instantly, that we were seeing another masterpiece in the making.
Yes, Naughty Dog’s behind this upcoming action-adventure/ horror title, set for release in 2012. Yes, the same team behind the masterful Uncharted series…sort of. Let’s start off with the way Naughty Dog is actually going about tackling two different properties at the same time. Basically, the talented developer has been split into two separate teams. This happened back when Uncharted 2 was out in the wild, getting showered in tens. From then, one team stayed completely dedicated to the Uncharted series, delving into the development of the now-available Uncharted 3, while the other team started work on a brand new IP. An original IP that would become The Last of US, a game that’s been two years in the making thus far.
Development news aside, we now know a bit more about the game’s two main characters: Joel and Ellie, voiced by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, respectively. Yes, this latest Naughty Dog production will be Nolan North-free…as of right now! This pair will be tasked with trekking through a post-apocalyptic America ravaged by a plague. The game will purely be a single-player affair, with network play being denied at this time (yay!). Oh, and the game’s been given a PEGI rating of 18, which here in the States translates to a hard M, yeah, go figure.
Be on the look out for my trailer analysis!
