Silent Hill References in Kojima’s O.D. Trailer

At the game awards last week, Hideo Kojima announced an upcoming project, OD, with a new trailer.

The mention of Kojima brings up good and bad memories for fans of the Silent Hill series. In 2014, fans beat P.T. on the PS4 to reveal that it was a teaser for Silent Hills, a collaboration between Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro. P.T. itself was very well-received, and for a brief moment, it seemed like the franchise was in good hands, about to be reborn. Then it was cancelled.

Many considered the series dead. But new projects were announced last year, and now Kojima is making announcements of his own.

In June we reported on Kojima’s rumored upcoming project. This included third-person footage of a character with a flashlight walking through corridors. This new trailer doesn’t give us much information, either. Actors in extreme closeups seem to be saying nonsense to the camera. Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and Udo Kier talk about “hungry purple dinosaurs.” A sound like the clicking of a Geiger counter plays in the background.

German cult actor Udo Kier appeared in Andy Warhol’s Flesh for Frankenstein (1973), Blade (1998), and Shadow of the Vampire (2000), among others. He has worked with Fassbinder, Argento, Werner Herzog, and now Hideo Kojima.
O.D.
Kojima appeared onstage from a door resembling the P.T. hallway door. A door’s reflection can also be seen in Sophia Lillis’ eyes. He states that he is using Xbox’s cloud gaming technology to make something new and immersive. “It is a game, don’t get me wrong,” he states through an interpreter, ” but it’s, at the same time, “a movie, and at the same time, a new form of media.” Director Jordan Peele also comes through the door, revealing that he is also working on the project.

Apparently, if you look closely in the trailer, the word “ATAMI” appears in block letters inside of Udo Kier’s mouth. This is a city in the Japanese prefecture Shizuoka which same fans suggest is the inspirations for the town of Silent Hill in the original game. There is a shot of an MRI scan, which may also refer back to the brightness screen in P.T.

You can watch the trailer and clip and decide for yourself. No release date was given, but it’s set to appear on Xbox when it does.
