Silent Hill f Debuts New Trailer and Story Details

Silent Hill fA new trailer for Silent Hill f was revealed today during this year’s Silent Hill Transmission, featuring insights from key members of the development team, as well as new details regarding the game’s story, characters, and setting.

While last year’s Silent Hill Transmission focused primarily on the Silent Hill 2 remake, this year it was all about Silent Hill f.

The upcoming game takes place in the fictional town of Ebisugaoka, Japan, inspired by the real-life town of Kanayama, Gero, in the Gifu Prefecture, and follows a young woman named Hinkao.

The official description of the game reads:

Shimizu Hinkao was living her life as an ordinary teenager. That is, until her town is suddenly shrouded in fog and begins to change in a horrific way. Now, she must explore a town she no longer recognizes while solving puzzles, fighting strange enemies, and doing everything she can to survive… in order to face the ultimate decision that she must make. This is a tale about a beautiful yet terrifying choice.

The game’s story is penned by renowned Japanese author Ryukishi07, best known for his Higurashi When They Cry visual novels.

The game also features longtime series composer Akira Yamaoka alongside composer Kensuke Inage. Yamaoka will be responsible for the soundscape of the game’s Fog World, while Inage will create the soundscape for the Otherworld, referred to in the game as the “Dark Shrine”. Monster designs will be handled by Japanese artist Kera.

One of the reasons the team designed the game so differently from previous titles was in response to the series’ loss of identity, which had gradually diminished over time due to various Western influences.

During the Transmission livestream, series producer Motoi Okamoto discussed the game’s conception, saying:

I believe the Silent Hill series was born out of blending the essence of Japanese horror with the essence of western horror. However, as it was based in the West for the longest time, it felt like the Japanese influence was fading. And so, this made us think, ‘What if we go in the opposite direction and make it 100 percent Japanese horror.’ And this game is the result.

The game’s aesthetic, design choices, and setting all feel 100% spot-on.  It’s great to see the series returning to its Eastern roots. It feels like the ideal choice after last year’s phenomenal, but safe SH2 remake.

No release date was given, but Silent Hill f is expected to launch on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. You can wishlist it for the platform of your choice now.
