The news reaching us from GSC Game World around S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 – Shadow of Chornobyl this week has been a mixed bag, to say the least.
First, there was the sad news of former GSC Game World programmer and developer of the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Volodymyr Yezhov, having died on December 22nd in the battle defending the Ukrainian Town of Bakhmut at 38 years old.
The loss has been felt by many in the game industry and beyond. We offer our sincerest condolences to his family and friends.
On a more positive note, GSC Game World also shared a new trailer for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 – Shadow of Chornobyl this week.
The trailer is titled “Come to me” and features loads of gameplay, showing off not only the detailed environments, and terrifying anomalies, but also takes time to introduce characters and give us a glimpse into the interactions players will have with them. Double-crossing and plotting around every turn is to be expected. All of this is accompanied by an ominous and foreboding voice-over, giving you a detailed account of ways in which you can die in the zone:
Died in an anomaly. Shot by Loners. Found with a stone around his neck. Thrown off a cliff. Torn apart by dogs… Here, at the Zone, feel free to choose your destiny.
The new video also gives us some rough story outlines, explaining that researchers managed to access the Noosphere, which in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games means a “tangible if invisible field surrounding the Earth linked by, affected by, or affecting both human minds and thoughts”, according to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Fandom Wiki. In the trailer, it is simply explained as “The Earth’s informational field”, comparing the scientific breakthrough to tap into this Noospehere as being as big as “the conquest of space”.
