Slant Six responds to Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City’s reception

Sad Nemmy is sad.

Like I stated in my review of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, I was really, really close to giving the game, developed by Canadian studio Slant Six, an unfortunately low score. But luckily, the game did manage to end up satisfying me throughout its final half, and I’m still actively playing its multiplayer suite. The same can’t be said for a multitude of other reviewers, though. And as you can see, my 7 out of 10 score is one of the few. So, what does Slant Six have to say about this poor reception?

“It’s challenging. A lot of people put a lot of time and effort into the game and obviously we’d like to see the review scores be a little better than they are right now,” states Slant Six producer Mike Kerr in an interview with Eurogamer less than a week after the game’s release.

Kerr goes on to state how despite being met with a mountain of negative reviews, the team is still reading through them, extracting constructive feedback that could help better them: “In the end, I think our position on it is that we read every review and we try to pull out all the constructive feedback that we can so we can learn a little about what people liked and what they didn’t.”

But at the end of the day, the team is glad that they accomplished what Capcom originally asked of them. “Then we look to what our internal goals were and what Capcom asked us to do and I think we accomplished what they wanted to do – we took the Resident Evil franchise in a different direction,” Kerr goes on to state. Yeah, the team did take the once pure survival horror series in a very different direction, resulting in a wave of anger surging through the fanbase. But apparently, Slant Six has actually received some praise via emails, with Kerr stating that they’ve “had a lot of really positive feedback from fans of the franchise.”

In the end, there’s always bound to be negative responses to a game’s launch. Yeah, sometimes you have your 10 out of 10 masterpieces, but other times you have titles that just fail to live up to fans’ original expectations. Or, in ORC’s case, titles that offer a drastically different experience than what’s come before. Kerr acknowledges this when he states: “So, there’s good and bad, but that’s to be expected with every launch. We’d obviously love the review scores to be a bit higher, but we’re really happy with the fan response.”

I’m not going to say that ORC is a great game, it’s not, but it is a fun and solid title. It is what it is really. It’s not intended to be the next big step for the series, it’s merely a spin-off, one that we all hoped would be a much more faithful trip down memory lane than the final product we ended up with. But hey, we still Revelations to enjoy and Resident Evil 6 coming up.

So what do you think? If you picked up the game when it launched almost a week ago, are you still playing it? Or did you beat it and rapidly proceeded to get rid of it? Sound off in the comments below!
