There has been some word recently about Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and what it might contain. Capcom themselves have hinted at stages and enemies past RE4 and RE5 and that they’ve been working on “Secrets and Unlockables to please long-time fans”. We still have no idea what this might entail, but we now know the groundwork of the game for certain. The product information has been released with the solidified facts of what Mercenaries 3D is:
“For the first time Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D delivers the intense Mercenaries gameplay experience on a handheld console. Featuring re-mastered stages from Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil 5, it’s a race against time as players try to defeat as many enemies as possible before the countdown reaches zero. The fast-paced, combat intensive action of Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D is available both as a solo experience or gamers across the world can team up and enjoy two-player co-op via network play.
Gamers will have the opportunity to tackle the game’s missions with legendary Resident Evil characters from past and present. These include Chris Redfield, Krauser, Hunk and, making her debut in a Mercenaries game, Claire Redfield.
While the gameplay will be familiar to those who have previously played Mercenaries, changes have been implemented to take advantage of the new hardware, most notably the transforming the stages and characters to full 3D plus the ability for players to move and shoot and the addition of touch screen functionality to switch weapons on the fly.
FEATURES:
-8 different playable characters all with at least 1 change of costume – including series favourites Chris Redfield from RE5, Hunk & Krauser from RE 4 . . . with more to be revealed soon.
-1 or 2 players – Ad Hoc and Nintendo Wi-Fi connection
-30 missions over 12 stages and 2 different game modes
-In-depth skill and abilities unlock system that encourages and rewards replaying. Skills and abilities include health, weapons damage, customisation etc
-2 different game modes – ‘scene attack’ and ‘survival’”
8 Characters (which would be confirmed at this point to be Chris, Jill, Claire, Wesker, HUNK, Krauser, Barry, & Rebecca), 12 stages (Public Assembly, Pueblo, The Mines, The Village, Castle, Ancient Ruins, Experimental Facility, Missile Area, Mountainside, Ship Deck, Water Island, Prison all would be assumed as those are the 12 stages from RE4 & RE5), 30 mission objectives, 2 gameplay modes (Survival likely is regular Mercenaries mode, no idea what Scene Attack is though), wi-fi multiplayer, alternate costumes for characters (each character has at least 1 alt), and customizable abilities.
There are a few things that seem off about this. The first thing I’m sure that will strike everyone; Where’s Leon? His absence here is rather strange since most of the rest of the Mercenaries cast are present, stages from the game he starred in are present, and Leon is a fan-favorite of many. There is also no mention on the ‘secrets and unlockables’ that the producer previously talked about or the hints about things past RE4 and RE5 for ‘long-time fans. However, since Capcom has said as well they were putting work on secrets and unlockables they can’t talk about yet, there could be more that is hidden away in the title that wouldn’t go on a product information page. Whatever the case, this is the basis of Mercenaries 3D and what we now have confirmed to be in this title for certain. There are also rumors of a July 1st US release date, but this is not confirmed and rather has been speculation on-part of several retailers for a while.
