Resident Evil: Revelations got a new trailer last week just in time for E3. Here we were introduced to some new characters that left Resident Evil fans a bit confused at first. The common belief was that this game would focus solely on Chris and Jill, but we can’t forget that even early on it was confirmed that other BSAA members would be making an appearance in Revelations.
Now we have two of those new members shown, Parker and Jessica. The latter being with Chris in the snowy mountains of Europe and the former being aboard the luxury cruise ship with Jill, a locale in which a good chunk of the game will take place in. Chris and Jessica’s mission isn’t exactly known yet, but you can surely bet it has something to do with attempting to cease production of some sort of virus. Jill and Parker’s mission, on the other hand, is to try to trace Chris’ last transmission which indicates that he’s also aboard the luxury cruise ship, even though we’ve seen him with Jessica in another environment.
Things aren’t really that clear, so I’m going to try and make sense of it all. Because, if you remember, Revelations’ debut trailer showed both Chris and Jill already in this huge ship. And then, of course, we had the highly debated appearance of the man tied down to the chair in between Chris and Jill. Theories have ranged from it being a Chris clone to Hunk and surprisingly, we didn’t get any new look at this mysterious character. Nor did we get a look at Hunk, though we did get to see another new character that aesthetically resembles Mr. Death.
So, it’s time to analyze the newest trailer for the game. Make sure to leave your comments below letting me know if you agree or disagree with my assessments. Also, don’t hesitate to share your own personal breakdown of this trailer below.
And it all begins with Jill waking up in what seems like a mansion. This part of the game was featured in the demo and it truly lived up to what Resident Evil fans visualize as being a mansion. It even had the classic main hall replicated from Spencer’s Estate. Tight halls and even a water-filled tub in need of unplugging to get an item from inside was present.
It’s not revealed exactly how Jill finds herself in the bedroom pictured above but that’ll most likely be one of the key “revelations” in the game. It’s here where she gets briefed on the mission: pinpoint Chris’ location aboard the luxury cruise ship. What’s interesting about all this, though, is that we’ve already seen a similar looking mansion in the debut trailer for the game, which also depicted Chris and Jill roaming through it together.
Now, we’re pretty much accustomed to Capcom scrapping Resident Evil games during development, hell, they even go through this process several times, just look at Resident Evil 4. So, perhaps, the Revelations we saw in the first trailer has been somewhat scrapped in favor for this new version. Or, they could still be connected. If so, then it would explain the appearance of the mysterious tied-down character. It’s likely that the Chris Jill finds and partners up with is in fact a clone or BOW of some sort, with the real one being the one tied down.
Or Parker could have been implemented into Revelations to replace Chris in the scenes we saw in the debut trailer. It’s not really clear as of this time, which is good because I’m sure this’ll be one of the game’s major plot points. And it’s pretty fun throwing around crazy theories relating to this notion.
Here we have a nice shot of the luxury cruise ship which will house a good chunk of the game. This is the area we’ve seen featured the most for media on this game and rightfully so since it brings back the series’ classic sense and feeling of being confined. Long corridors and loads of rooms to try and not get lost in; this cruise ship is shaping up to rival the likes of the iconic mansion and perhaps even the RPD.
This cruise ship also ties in perfectly with the new form of BOW making its debut in this game. The BOWs here are water-based and they can get around much faster due to the vastness of the ocean surrounding the ship. It’ll be interesting to see some of the bosses in this game, as I would imagine they can destroy entire parts of the ship leading to the flooded areas we’ve already been lightly exposed to.
Doesn’t that make you hungry? This may be the result of one of the new BOWs emerging from the ground to kill some of the scientists in the laboratory.
I hope it’s not Chris’ blood…
These are the puddles I was referring to back in my preview. Throughout the demo, what’s pictured above would be the end result of the new BOWs after you succesfully shot them down. Now, this is probably one of the new BOWs already dead in what may have been a gunfight in what looks like a storage room.
Once again we see a storage room similar to the one in the previous image. But here we see something much more interesting.
Being water-based, Revelations’ new BOWs could travel throughout the ship as pictured above. It would be very easy for them get around different parts of the ship this way, making them even deadlier than zombies and other classic BOWs.
Pictured above is one of the deceased scientists that were running unknown experiments on the ship. Experiments that probably led to the creation of the new BOWs.
Look closely at the body, though, specifically his head. It looks like he may have been shot right in the cranium, with a chunk of his face missing on the side of his head. This could be the result of an actual armed soldier, possibly belonging to a new corporation featured in this game (Ada’s organization, perhaps?) or it could just be the result of a good slash to the head by a one of the new enemies.
This also seems to be in the same room as the image depicting the bloody mess on the floor.
Ah, yes. The classic “opening-door” scenes. Don’t worry, though, there aren’t any masked load times everytime you open a door. This is just a nice little nod to fans. Jill introducing herself via voice-over is yet another nice touch that should bring fans back to the Resident Evil 1 days and Jill’s dialogue in the intro.
There’s also blood splattered on the walls and floor here. Not quite inviting, but hey, Jill is a hardened veteran so she’ll definitely get “to the root of the problem”, hopefully not becoming a “jill sandwich” on the way.
Here we see Ms. Valentine going through the same storage area picture before, with the puddles that look like decomposed forms of the new BOWs. Something tells me this particular room will be host to some pop-out scares. We’ll see, though.
Poor scientist. Didn’t stand a chance. These new enemies sure love to leave behind bloody messes. Here we see the result of an attack on one of the researchers aboard the ship. Once again, we don’t know exactly what kind of experiments they’re conducting, but they may be getting killed by that which they helped create.
This scene has been seen before already and it even shows up in the game’s demo that’ll be included with your purchase of Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D.
Watch out, Jill! Behind you!
This image shows the new BOW emerging from what may be the bodies of water they travel in. You can tell by how his appearance here looks really liquid in nature. Also, what weapon is Jill holding here? I want to say possibly one of the rods from Resident Evil 5, but Capcom hasn’t said anything in regards to melee weapons yet so this is just an assumption for now. It sure doesn’t look like a gun, though.
Everyone loves Jill, even the BOWs! Nemesis has probably performed a barrel roll in his grave out of jealousy. These new enemies aren’t really pretty and they look like the regenerators/iron maidens (without the spikes) from Resident Evil 4. Not to mention that they have mace-like hands reminiscent of the T-078 tyrant’s right arm from Code Veronica.
I think that the way they aim to spread their infection is by inserting some sort of internal liquid into the victim’s mouth, which is what is going on in this image, perhaps. The victim then becomes a carrier of this new virus and goes on to continue the process on someone else. Just a theory, but I think this is very likely.
In this shot we get a good look at this new foe in its entirety. All the characteristics I noted above can be clearly seen here. There’s also other variants of this new BOW and one of them was featured in the E3 demo. Just picture this enemy with a bloated upper body and you’ll know how he looks like.
This image also helps prove something I pointed out earleir: these enemies’ method of travel. The same liquid substance seen before is once again present here, trailing the foe. Also, like before, he’s coming out of the vent. I really wish we can finally get a name for these guys…I was told we will soon so there’s something to look forward to.
We already know there will be under-water segments in Revelations that will even see you fighting against enemies while swimming. This is totally new territory for the series and it’ll be interesting to see how it all turns out.
Here we see the door in front of Jill lock down and the red light going off. This may be the signal we’ll get everytime we’re in a part of the ship that’s about to get flooded. These segments should definitely prove to be quite tense and add a new type of horror into the mix, especially to those who are afraid of drowning.
Here we have what is most likely a continuation of the scene pictured before. Jill is now submerged in water with time running out for her to find an escape. We don’t see enemies here but I did get to see them in a gameplay video Capcom showed off at E3, in which Parker was taking on fierce-looking infected sea creatures while trying his best not to drown.
What I’m wondering is if these flood sequences will be scripted or if they’ll just happen at random. It would definitely be awesome, but prove to be quite tedious for some, if these scenes took place without you expecting it. We’ll have to wait and see if this turns out to be the case.
This is a nice image of both Jill and one of the new additions to the series’ cast of characters, Parker Luciani who is also a member of the BSAA.
This scene probably takes place really early on in the game where both BSAA operatives have just landed on the ship looking for a safe way in. It could turn out to be the case especially since the guns Jill and Parker are both wielding are more “we don’t know what to expect but these should suffice” than “we need a lot of firepower to take these enemies down”. Also, note the rain. Yeah, there’s a lot of water in this game.
No, don’t worry, we’re not turning into Rotten.com. But just look at this mess, poor guy.
The new BOWs in the game are surely dangerous and just looking at the damage they leave behind should be enough to let you know this isn’t your little brother’s Resident Evil. Now, this could just be a plain-ol’ dead body or it could be a body in the process of transformation. Once again, we don’t have enough information to have that proved so we’ll just have to suffice with theories.
Once again we get a look at Parker. And this gives me an excuse to once again state how funny his face looks. Nothing agains the guy, we barely know anything about him, but it’s just something about his face that makes me laugh everytime.
He looks like a mix of three established Resident Evil characters: Chris, Billy and Kevin from Outbreak. Intentional or not? We’re not quite sure, but I still think he has been implemented as a replacement for Chris while he’s out somewhere in Europe with Jessica (another new character and BSAA members).
Okay, there’s three important things here worth noting. Let’s tackle this one at a time.
First off, see that weapon behind Parker’s back? Yeah, that’s an axe. Capcom has been keeping quiet when asked about melee in Revelations but this image, coupled with the previous one showing Jill holding a rod-like weapon, seem to indicate we’ll probably be able to use melee weapons in this game. At least we’ll be able to as Parker, since he is playable and I’m sure that weapon isn’t strapped on to his back just for show.
Next we have the actual poster Parker is looking at here. It seems to be propaganda for the mercenary group also aboard the ship that may be trying to obtain the new virus for themselves. Where their loyalties rest is another question, though. I brought up Ada’s organization before but that may just be wishful thinking. Now on to the last noteworthy part of this image.
We have a message, in spanish, over the poster written in blood. After trying to zoom in as much as I can I put but hispanic background to good use and I came up with the following, broken (since I couldn’t really make out all the words) translation: “ You’ve finally come here to die.” This was perhaps a trap set up for Jill and Parker and this is made even more believable in a scene coming up later in which this same room is gassed and we’re met with another mysterious figure, who may not even be all that mysterious…
Another shot of the cruise ship and here we also see the small boat Jill and Parker arrived in. Which will get blown to ashes momentarily, a scene which is also shown at the end of the E3 demo. This helps justify that Jill and Parker have walked right into a trap.
First-person aiming may sound a bit odd to some especially in regards to combat in the Resident Evil series, but trust me, it works. It perfectly mixes the precisions brought about by the on-rails Chronicles games on Wii with the camera perspective and traversal of Resident Evil 4 and 5. And hell, for all of those people who complained about not being able to move while aiming, your wish has been granted here.
But what’s most important about this particular screen-cap is the enemy dissolving into a puddle which I’ve been mentioning a lot already in this analysis and in my preview. And once again I’ll say that this makes these new foes much more deadly, seeing as how they can appear wherever water can leak through. We’re definitely going to be in for some tense moments once the game hits in 2012.
While fans may have detested the co-op aspect in Resident Evil 5, due to it stripping away the sense of horror from the experience, you can rest easy and know that Revelations won’t be featuring any online cooperative mode.
The scene pictured above comes from one of the segments throughout the game in which you’ll be accompanied by your partner, this is likely to be the case in Chris and Jessica’s scenario as well. This is still a pure single-player experience, though. So don’t let this image make you think of Resident Evil 5’s co-op affairs.
And yet again here we have an introduction to another new character. This one is unnamed but I was told that we’ll be learning his identity in the months to come.
This scene capped off the E3 demo and ended in quite a cliffhanger. He rushes into the scene right after Jill and Parker’s escape ship explodes and grabs Jill. He makes quite an acrobatic entrance, too. Wesker clone? Nah…
Now things get even better. In the game’s debut trailer we saw Hunk for a couple of seconds. This made many fans of the fourth survivor quite excited but now we have a character showing up in this latest trailer that may or may not be Hunk.
He certainly looks like Mr. Death but is that really him? Remember the scenario we were all in once we saw the blonde “tube-girl” in Resident Evil 5? We all thought it was Sherry and it ended up being an indoctrinated Jill. This could be a repeat of that moment. It looks like Hunk but we shouldn’t dismiss the possibility that it may also be a new character, possibly working for the mercenary group that may be involved with this new incident.
This mysterious character shows up after the room Parker and Jill are conversing in, the one with the propaganda image and spanish writing, gets filled with gas. Both Jill and Parker get sent down to the floor due to the lack of oxygen and in comes “Hunk” stating: “It’s time to learn the truth, Ms. Valentine”.
What could that mean? I personally think it has to do with Chris and how his transmission was rigged to lead Parker and Jill to that ship in order to get them to walk right into a trap. Because as we see in the next scene, Chris is adventuring through the snowy mountains of Europe with Jessica. But first, let’s get introduced to Jessica.
When this scene first started playing we really weren’t sure who these two characters were.
Before this trailer, months ago actually, we got concept art that depicted a snowy mountain range that also served as a crash site. We saw two figures standing in the image, too. Our assumption was that that was both Jill and Chris, examining the destruction in front of them. Now, it’s a different scenario.
Here we have both Chris and another new BSAA member, Jessica. Chris’ scenario may be a bit more co-op oriented than Jill’s but we can all expect these two to split up a few times in true Resident Evil fashion. We don’t see the crash site in this scene so that’s left up to our imagination ( I mean, we did see the concept art). Personally, I think these two are trying to find a facility nearby that’s been conducting experiments to create new BOWs. Possibly the same BOWs running around the luxury cruise ship Jill and Parker are situated in.
Here’s an up close shot of Jessica. We don’t really know anything about her other than the fact that, as aforementioned, she’s going to be partnered up with Chris on this Europe-based mission. It’ll definitely be interesting to learn more about this new character. Does she have any ties to already existing Resident Evil characters? She does look a little like Manuela from the Operation Javier scenario in Darkside Chronicles…
And the trailer ends with the scene pictured above. Jessica asks Chris if he’s even listening to her after a moment of silence. Why would Chris stay quiet? And what is he looking at?
My theory here is that Chris has just received intel on what is currently going on in the cruise ship with Jill and Parker while he’s in Europe with Jessica. This brings up another question: Who the hell was the Chris we saw in early images for the game and in the debut trailer? He was pictured with Jill going through corridors aboard the ship. Then we have the man tied down to the chair and Chris’ cold response to Jill while she’s pointing her gun at both him and the aforementioned man on the chair. Suddenly we can all see that Chris shown before as being a clone of some sort, a new BOW perhaps.
Resident Evil: Revelations is truly shaping up to live up to its name in more ways than one. The game brings the series back to its roots and focuses solely on pitting players in horrifying situations with limited ammo and a lot of enemies. Puzzles are back, too making this game even more closer to the originals than recent entries. Then we have the actual subtitle for the game, “Revelations”, which is something that will definitely be present in the game. There’s a lot of questions unanswered and that’s where the fun comes in, speculating with other Resident Evil fans and debating with conflicting theories. It’s a good time to be a Resident Evil fan and I hope I gave you guys something to center discussions around for the months to come.
