Next week Resident Evil fans will be getting their first taste of Resident Evil on the Nintendo 3DS with the release of The Mercenaries 3D. Said game will also include a demo for next year’s Resident Evil: Revelations, albeit a short one. Despite its length, the demo version for Revelations should definitely make those not too pleased with the franchise’s recent action-packed outings happy to know that next year the series will go back to its roots with this 3DS exclusive.
Recently, Nintendo’s president, Satoru Iwata had a chat with Revelations’ producer, Masachika Kawata in regards to the series on the 3DS. Kawata was questioned about the overall nature of developing two Resident Evil titles side-by-side for the platform, to which he responded:
“This time might have been an unusual example, but since we were making two games at once, we divided it up, taking care of the final action bits in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D and making graphics and other aspects of presentation in Resident Evil: Revelations,”
The plan was for both games to be released fairly close to each other, but development on Revelations was taking longer due to it being treated as a full-blown console experience:
“The plan for Resident Evil: Revelations was moving along first, but we were putting a lot of work into the scenario and other aspects of the game, so it was going to take a long time to complete.”
Capcom will still be releasing a game early on in the 3DS’ life-cycle though with the launch of The Mercenaries 3D next week:
“we wanted to release something soon after the Nintendo 3DS system hit the market, so we started making and testing Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D — the game system of which was already pretty much in place.”
As aforementioned, Revelations is being treated as a new console outing from the franchise would be so Kawata and his team have been “careful about adding elements specific to handheld gaming,” He then goes on to state: “It’s hard to talk about anything we haven’t disclosed yet, though.”
What handheld specific elements may we end up getting with Revelations? The first thing that comes to mind for me is short mission-like chapters, possibly lasting the amount of time the E3 demo lasted. It would make it easier for those seeking quick pick-up-and-play sessions. What do you guys think? Could we we end up getting a “gotta catch ’em all” aspect in this game, brought about by the new item scanner? Sound off in the coments below.
