Resident Evil Revelations originally found its home on the Nintendo 3DS. It wasn’t until later that we ended up getting console and PC ports. With Resident Evil Revelations 2, things have gone a bit differently, much to the dismay of Nintendo fans.
Not only will the Wii U not be getting Revelations 2, but the sub-series’ original home, the Nintendo 3DS, won’t be either. Which seems like a missed opportunity seeing how the recently released New 3DS XL has a stronger processor and enhanced 3D, along with the addition of the C stick. So, why exactly is the game not coming out for the handheld? Revelations 2 producer Michiteru Okabe states:
The original game was released on home consoles a little while after the 3DS. It was called the ‘Unveiled Edition’ in Japan but just Resident Evil Revelations for consoles in the West.
That’s where our starting point for the sequel is in a sense, the versions that were already on home platforms.
It’s partly a technical reason. We have our own custom engine called the MT Framework, and as the mobile and home console versions are quite different technically, given that we were taking the home console versions as a starting point, it just led somewhat naturally.
We tried to release it on as many platforms as we could, and that later became a selection of current and next-gen Xbox and PlayStation platforms as well as PC, so that’s how we ended up with that.
So, there you have it. Nintendo owners will miss out on some handheld Resident Evil horror this time around, but Vita owners will get their first taste of it (unless they already have by playing the PS1 classics on the handheld).
