Resident Evil 6 – an educated guess of what’s in store

So Resident Evil 6 has been outed.  It’s out there.  Plain as day, like a nasty rumour spread out about you that just so happens to be true.  Good thing too, because I was starting to worry that they were just going to leave us hanging there.  What with Wesker dead and this…Les Enfants Miserables type thing looming over the end of RE5, how would the story actually end?  I never really had any doubts as to whether or not another game would be released, but what concerns me is…is it going to be any different?

Well, Capcom has a series on their hands that’s getting pretty long in the tooth.  Staying fresh and keeping a fanbase happy isn’t easy.  After all, screw up once and you’ve pissed off a lot of people who ‘may’ never come back to the series.  So looking at the freshly-released trailer and looking at what Capcom has given us in the past, we can take an educated guess on what Resident Evil 6 has in store for us.  Is this the complete list of what we think is going to be in the game?  No – we’re saving that for our complete trailer breakdown.

Established characters, some new ones no one will ever hear from ever again

The game is already rumoured to feature Ada, Leon and Chris and in the trailer you can clearly see Jill.  But it wouldn’t be a party if you didn’t invite everyone.  Here’s a solid bet that more will join in on the fun too, in some way, shape or form.  Even if it’s just through memos.

But in traditional Resident Evil style, they’ll throw in some supporting characters that no one will ever hear from ever again.  They might die at the end of the game trying to save the canonical cast, or they might just fade into oblivion after the credits roll.

“Hey Rebecca, want to come on our next mission?  JUST KIDDING!  But don’t move on with your life, we might need you for a training exercise or something”

Mercenaries

How do you add replay value?  Throw in an unlockable game mode.  The series has been doing this for a long time, and there’s no reason to stop now, especially with an action-heavy style game that Resident Evil 6 is shaping up to be.  If Capcom has learned anything from Mercenaries 3DS, it’s that people like Mercenaries as a side-dish.  It’s why I’m still banking on the idea that Nintendo and Capcom will release a 3DS bundle with both Resident Evil: Revelations and Resident Evil: Mercenaries 3D.

I still want this to happen.  Even though I already own a 3DS.

Moving and aiming, but not running and gunning

I’ll admit, I probably didn’t use the moving and aiming ability as much as I could have in previous games.  And during the demo of Revelations, I didn’t use it at all.  But only because I didn’t know that I could, and it was just…awkward to get used to in the 6 minutes I was allowed to demo the game.  However, regardless of how awkward it feels, it’s probably pretty safe to say that this new control feature is here to stay.

However, one does have to wonder if Capcom will take the logical next step and evolve moving and aiming into running and gunning.  Running and gunning changes the atmosphere of the game greatly…and so I really want to say no.  But looking at that trailer again…  No – Capcom wouldn’t do that to us!  They couldn’t!

Las Plagas/Cephalo/Another Variant

The saturation of zombies in the gaming market is no secret to anyone.  Would Capcom really add to that, when they have the option of saying “No, these aren’t zombies, they’re something different…they just look like zombies in one form.”  Regardless of whether or not zombies are what made the Resident Evil franchise so powerful in the first place, zombies are being phased out in favour of some other kind of grotesque creatures.  At the beginning of the trailer, it looks like zombies, but I saw one of them jump.  They JUMPED!  Also…it’s pretty hard to deny that this isn’t the old T-Virus of days gone by.

Maybe we’ll get the best of both worlds?

Easy Accessibility

I don’t say this lightly – but the difficulty of the Resident Evil series and gaming in general is on a bit of a decline.  There are some tough games out there, but y’know what?  They don’t exist in the Resident Evil franchise anymore.  That’s no accident.

Capcom really changed the game when they released Resident Evil 4 (probably something you’re tired of hearing by now).  What seemed before like it was a maze of dark hallways, locked doors and a plethora of ornately carved locking mechanisms turned into a relatively straightforward affair.  It was such a drastic change and people loved it not only because it was so fresh and amazing, but because it was accessible.  If you can say anything about Resident Evil 5, you can at least say at its very core, it was an easy game to get into and get the hang of.  The learning curve was almost non-existent.

If Capcom really wants to sell this game not just to the fans but to the gaming public in general, they need to make it accessible for everyone.  Whether that includes tutorials that can be turned on or off, or just making the game all the more easier.  Will one suffer for the sake of the other?  Absolutely – and guess who it’s going to be?

Lights, Camera, ACTION

Yeah…take another look at that trailer.  I don’t think any explanation is required here.  This might fall in with making the game accessible to everyone.  An action game is a hell of a lot easier to play than your typical survival horror game.

Sorry.

Multiplayer

This sounds awful.  I understand.  You’ve got boat-loads of action, and you’re more than likely going to have multiplayer in some way, shape or form.  But it’s not all bad.  Looking at the trailer, this kind of game begs for multiplayer, and Capcom would be missing out on a great opportunity if they didn’t seize it.  I expect that it won’t be in the same vein as RE5’s multiplayer though.

If you’ve got a second player, then you’ll have a partner – but if you’re by yourself – you get the gist of it.  Playing through an entire campaign with a buddy is fun, but I don’t want the constant assistance of AI – even if it’s just to carry my stuff.
