Operation Raccoon City producer would love to develop a Resident Evil title for Wii U

Nintendo once again impressed the masses at this year’s E3 with the reveal of their upcoming home console: Wii U. The hardware will finally give us HD visuals but the most notable aspect of it has to do with the actual controller (as is always expected from Nintendo). I like to think of it as a full-blown home console version of the Nintendo DS.

Wii U’s revolutionary controller is basically a tablet complete with a full set of buttons, a pair of analog sticks and a touch-screen. Like the Wii and its Wiimote, this tablet will also have a lot of motion capabilities. But wait, I didn’t get to the best part of this controller yet. With the Wii U, gamers will be able to turn off their TVs and continue to play their game on the controller’s screen. One can already imagine all the possibilities for a new Resident Evil title on Wii U, even Operation Raccoon City’s producer, Masachika Kawata who shows great interest in developing a new entry in the franchise sometime in the future:

“But for me personally, I’d love to do just that. It’s a very, very interesting piece of hardware. Whenever I see new game machines and their new possibilities get into my head, the ideas just start flowing. I’d absolutely love to make a Resident Evil on it. I really love the idea of being able to play the game even if my wife or my kids come and steal the TV. That’s great, brilliant.”

Don’t take this as an official confirmation, though, as Kawata suggests:

“Whether or not we actually will develop a Resident Evil title for Wii U, we’ll put that aside as obviously I don’t know yet,”

Regardless, we can definitely expect a Resident Evil title to land on Wii U sometime in its lifecycle. The thing is: how will the game utilize the console’s robust features? I can think of a good amount of features that can be implemented into a Resident Evil title on Wii U thanks to its controller, but I’ll save those ideas for an upcoming article. Stay tuned.
