Sometimes fans get surprised to see a handheld entry in their favorite franchises be treated as a full-fledged sequel. It happened with Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker; a game that early on in its development was being considered as Metal Gear Solid 5. Despite ending up without a number tailing at the end of the title; Peace Walker did feel like a step forward for the acclaimed franchise. And from one cherished series to another, it seems that Resident Evil is in a similar scenario.
With the announcement of Resident Evil: Revelations came many cries of joy from loyal fans who have longed for the day that their favorite franchise will return to their survival-horror roots. And now with the revelation of Slant Six’s Operation Raccoon City, it seems that Revelations is the series’ true next step; a notion that has now been confirmed by Capcom themselves by way of the game’s producer Masachika Kawata:
“Unlike Mercenaries, which is all about shooting action, Revelations is all about survival horror, the very genre Resident Evil established. We actually think of Revelations as a direct sequel to Resident Evil 5 and it will be full of new, innovative ideas and characters.”
The game’s producer also confirmed that Revelations will indeed have a strong showing at this year’s E3 convention taking place in June. He also went on to suggest potential DLC for the upcoming Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D as well as expressing his interests to expand the traditional unlockable mode turned full-fledged title to become its own sub-series within the franchise:
“Should the Mercenaries establish itself as a franchise as we hope, we’ll be looking into expanding the game through DLC, though of course we’d have to consult Nintendo regarding the specifics.”
