Resident Evil 7: Biohazard already looked fantastic when it was initially released in 2017 for PS4, Windows, and Xbox One. Now, the PC version looks even more spectacular thanks to a newly released mod.
Dubbed the ‘4K UHD Upscaled Textures (Ray Tracing Version)’ mod, it upscales the environmental textures of the game using AI software and is free to download now via Nexusmods. The mod retains the vanilla 4K textures in the game and instead prioritizes the initially ignored 1K and 2K textures. There is also a non-Ray Tracing version of the mod available.
Here’s a description of the mod’s features, per the Nexusmods site:
This mod retextures 1,497 vanilla 1K and 2K textures with AI upscaled 4K textures. Vanilla 4K textures are untouched. Wood, metal, and stone textures were AI upscaled, and select paintings were replaced with high-resolution imagery. Textures with very fine detail i.e. cloth, photographs, text, etc. remain untouched to prevent the game from having a “muddy” look. Some of these upscaled textures may look nearly identical to the originals with only subtle differences, but wood in particular should look much nicer up close.
I have included a FULL and LITE version of the mod. The FULL version upscales most 1K & 2K textures to 4K. The LITE version upscales only 1K textures to 4K. This still gives a noticeable upgrade to the vanilla textures and may perform better for systems with limited VRAM. If using Praydog’s VR mod, the LITE version of this mod is recommended for low to mid-range GPUs as it is optimized for performance. It is recommended to NOT supersample RE7 in Steam VR, Virtual Desktop, the Oculus app, etc. when using the FULL version of this texture mod in VR with low to mid-range GPUs, or the game may crash.
In 2022, RE2 Remake, RE3 Remake, and Resident Evil 7 got a free new-gen update for consoles and PC. Anyone who owned any or all of the games on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC could download the new and improved versions for free, and experience upgraded visuals with ray tracing, faster loading times, higher frame rate, and 3D audio. The PS5 versions also made use of the DualSense controller, utilizing the adaptive triggers and haptic feedback for greater immersion. The PC upgrades were available via a patch.
Be sure to check out the Nexusmods site to download the new free 4K HD Upscaled Textures PC mod.
