The Horror Game Awards 2023, hosted by IGN, dished out prizes left and right, but one clear winner stood out among all the competition: Resident Evil 4 Remake.
Most notably, the Resident Evil 4 Remake won Horror Game of The Year, which is no small feat considering the other nominees: Faith: The Unholy Trinity, Signalis, System Shock Remake, and The Callisto Protocol. But that’s not all. As it turned out Resident Evil 4 Remake actually took home most of the prizes that were given out.
Here is the full list of awards for Resident Evil 4 Remake at The Horror Game Awards 2023:
- Best Performance (Nick Apostolides)
- Best Soundtrack
- Best Game Design
- Best Character (Leon S. Kennedy)
- Horror Game of The Year
In an honorable mention fitting with the above, Resident Evil Village VR won Best VR/AR and stole the title from its nominees, Afterlife VR, Propagation: Paradise Hotel, The Dark Pictures: Switchback VR, and The Walking Dead Saints and Sinners (Chapter 2): Retribution.
The winners in the rest of the categories are:
- Best Horror Trailer: Silent Hill 2
- Best Horror Multiplayer: The Outlast Trials
- Best Indie Game: Signalis
- Best Audio Design: Dead Space Remake
- Best Art Direction: Scorn
- Lifetime Achievement Award: Michael Hedberg
There will certainly be ample discussion around the fact that a (fantastic) remake of a game from 2005 absolutely mopped the floor with its (mostly) contemporary competition, and about what this means for the genre, and the industry, going forward.
On top of that, consider that when you count Silent Hill 2, and the Dead Space Remake (not even counting the lifetime achievement award for Michael Hedberg, who is currently working on a new Alone in The Dark) and we have a total of 7 out of 11 awards (if I didn’t miss anything) going to remakes of classic horror games.
Will we be getting even more remakes of classics, as studios and publishers are eager to get a piece of the pie, and will this be to the detriment of developers risking betting on new IPs in the future? We will have to wait and see.
Resident Evil 4 Remake is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series S|X.
