Camel 101, developers of 2016’s Syndrome, are returning to the first person horror genre with Those Who Remain. Set to release in 2018, Those Who Remain tells the story of Edward Turner, a man with a troubled past who finds something is terribly wrong in the small town of Dormont. With creatures roaming in the darkness, Edward must stay in the light if he wants to survive and solve the mysteries of the town.
The premise certainly sounds familiar. We’ve seen the “troubled past” trope in almost every major horror series, including Silent Hill, Resident Evil, and The Evil Within. The light and dark mechanic also sounds incredibly reminiscent of Alan Wake. But that’s not to say the game won’t be interesting; Camel 101 is touting the game as a “thrilling puzzle-adventure game”, which sounds more in line with a narrative experience than something like Outlast 2 or Resident Evil 7. The developer also mentions alternate dimensions that the player can switch between at any time for puzzle solving, so I’m hoping to see some clever puzzle designs rather than item-fetching and block-moving.
