RE4 Director Praises Remake, Says They Improved His “Half-Assed” Story

Shinji Mikami Praises Resident Evil 4 Remake, Says They Improved His “Half-Assed” Story Written “In 2 Weeks”

Resident Evil 4 is a fan favorite, and its remake by Capcom has only deepened the love for this survival horror classic. The updated version reimagines the original while staying true to the elements that defined the genre, making it a strong contender for GOTY 2023.

Shinji Mikami, the original director of Resident Evil 4, hasn’t shared much about the remake until recently, when he spoke with IGN, offering high praise for Capcom’s work.

Mikami highlighted Capcom’s careful approach in expanding the storyline and improving the game’s setting. He said,

I think the comprehensive and fundamental understanding of what it was that made the original work in the first place is probably the most important point of a good remake and I thought it was really well done.

Another thing I thought was really well done was the way they took the half-assed scenario that I just wrote up in two weeks and really built up on that and really fleshed it out.

While it’s unclear if Mikami has completed the Resident Evil 4 Remake’s Separate Ways expansion, featuring Ada Wong, his comments match well with Capcom’s approach. He added,

They showed a good understanding of the backbone of each character. And they took not just the scenario itself, but even the dialogue, and they improved all that stuff so that was really great.

In another part of the interview, Mikami talked about his latest work on Shadows of the Damned Remastered. He mentioned that he prefers creating remakes over remasters, though he is always interested in new projects.

Personally, I’m more interested in remaking Killer7 than I was in remastering Shadows of the Damned. If I got to choose, I’d rather do a sequel to Killer7 or something. Making something completely new and original and putting a bunch of revolutionary stuff in it.

Capcom launched the remake last year, and it is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X|S.
