Polygon delves into Alan Wake 2’s original demo and concept

Polygon has today published an extensive look at Remedy Game’s cancelled Alan Wake 2 concept. No, this does not mean an Alan Wake sequel isn’t happening. In fact, the odds will probably improve now that this feature is out and Quantum Break is nearing the end of development.

Before the original Alan Wake released in the summer of 2010, Remedy had already begun planning and thinking about where to take the series with a full sequel, according to Sam Lake, Remedy’s creative director and head writer. Polygon has a 14 minute video of an Alan Wake 2 prototype, showing a little bit of what the sequel had in mind in terms of enemies, gameplay and story. But overall, it’s clearly not too far removed from the original game.

According to the feature, a lot of what was originally prototyped for Alan Wake 2 ended up in American Nightmare, the pulpy standalone spin-off. The story concept for the prototype footage shown starts by showing that Alan Wake 2 would continue Alan’s journey through The Dark Place while the rest of the world considered his disappearance something of legend, with a documentary being filmed on his story. Enemy encounters are much more varied in the prototype, with the creatures interacting with the environment. Mr. Scratch, the evil doppelganger of Alan was going going to born through a combination of the power of The Dark Place and the legend of Alan Wake himself.

Remedy has shared the prototype of Alan Wake 2, because they’re not afraid to discuss what was originally planned but is no more. The material that they have shown apparently does not spoil any plans that they may have for an Alan Wake 2, which we may very well see someday. In regards to what’s next for the studio after Quantum Break, Sam Lake said the following: “Among other things … we are discussing the possibility of an Alan Wake sequel with multiple partners, but nothing has been decided.”

“Only time will tell.”
