The term “dungeon crawler” is one spawned by the fact that the roots of the genre were in decrepit and depressing dungeons, where the darkness was oppressive and the often rivaled that of the best the survival horror genre had to offer. In recent years though, dungeon crawlers have become increasingly more vibrant and colorful. While not necessarily a flaw, those longing for a more gothic experience have had to wait a long time to experience another gritty hack and slash. The wait is finally over though, as indie developer Grinding Gear Games has now officially started the open beta for their foreboding dungeon crawler Path of Exile.
Despite the developers referring to this as an open beta, this is for all intents and purposes the official launch of the game. As with any open beta, the game is open to the public and all you have to do is create an account and download the installer for the game. The game is entirely free to play so there’s no reason not to head over to their website and give it a shot, I know I’ll be venturing into the world of Wraeclast tonight along with legions of other would be adventurers.
