It took a lot of time and it will forever remain a stain on Valve’s good name, but Paranautical Activity has finally being greenlit and is now available as an early access title.
The game suddenly appeared in the spotlight when Valve refused to have it released on steam by Adult Swim, as the developer Code Avarice had originally attempted to make it through the Greenlight Process and Valve didn’t want to send indie studios the message that they can avoid Greenlight by seeking out a publisher. Many people criticized Valve’s decision, as this meant Code Avarice now had to find a way to promote a dead Greenlight page and pass on what was otherwise a pretty great deal. Regardless, the game has now passed the dreaded trials of the Greenlight gauntlet and has found its way into early access, which means you can now buy the title and play it while it is still in beta.
The game itself seeks to combine the run&gun style of classic shooters like Doom with the randomized content of more modern roguelikes (FTL, Don’t Starve and so forth). From what I have seen it focuses a lot on boss fights and has a very pleasing, pixelated aesthetic. The game currently costs $9.99, though Europeans will be ripped off slightly more.
