On June 24, 2013, American McGee started a Kickstarter for a new title: “OZombie.” 14 days have passed since then, and only 14% of the minimum $950,000 has been accumulated, so McGee believes it’s time to introduce some serious changes to the fundraiser.
In an update on the Kickstarter page, McGee proposed a plan that consists of three parts: renaming the game to something more catchy, making the film rights for an Alice movie a separate fundraiser, and making a new video to advertise what OZombie is about. The first part of the plan is something I really like, since the current name could confuse somebody who doesn’t get the joke. American McGee’s Oz would be an obvious candidate, but sadly that name is owned by a number of different entities, including Atari. As for the second and third suggestions, those might be a little more difficult, as several people have already backed the Kickstarter with film rights selected as an option (McGee admits this and will email these backers). Aside from that, a Kickstarter campaign tends to draw the most publicity at the start, so a new video at this stage may already be too late.
It seems that fans of the game remain optimistic, as the comments below the update are filled with positive feedback and suggestions for new names. American has stated that the plan will only go through if the backers agree with the changes, so expect more updates later this week!
