What an awesome day today is turning out to be. We loved Outlast here at Rely, and we’ve been waiting with bated breath ever since Red Barrels announced they were working on a sequel some time ago. The game was officially announced today with a creepy and ambiguous trailer. Thanks to developer Red Barrels, we’ve got a little more information as well thanks to a press release.
Philippe Morin, co-founder of Red Barrels goes into detail as to what kind of a game we can expect:
No conflict is ever black and white. But once the dust has settled, the victors get to decide who was right and who was wrong. Who is good and who is evil. Human nature pushes us to extremes of violence and depravity, which we then justify by divine inspiration and a promise of paradise to come. Horror rises from desperation and blind faith. OUTLAST 2 will test your faith, pushing players to a place where going mad is the only sane thing to do.
Faith was a strong element in the original game but ended up taking a side-seat to a more science-fiction oriented plot about three-quarters of the way through. As much as I loved Outlast, the mad-scientist thing felt a little dry and uninteresting by the time I got to it- the cult that the escaped patients of Mount Massive had built was chilling and sick, and seeing more of that in the sequel would be great.
The game has been confirmed to be set in a new location, with new characters. Mount Massive asylum is a thing of the past, and will probably not be appearing in the game. Of course the night vision camera, the original Outlast’s most identifying feature, will be returning.
Co-founder, David Chateauneuf adds:
We have even more surprises and I can’t wait to tell you all the ways we’re going to make Outlast 2 gamers suffer.
The game is due out in fall 2016, we’ll keep you posted as to any more information as it becomes public.
