Onimusha Warlords Remaster Getting New Japanese Dub

A lot of us here at Rely have been pretty excited for the return of Onimusha to home consoles for the first time in over ten years (with the most recent release being 2006’s Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams on PS2). Warlords, the first game in the series, was announced to be getting an HD remaster for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Switch, and apparently will be getting a new Japanese dub. As far as I can tell, the original dub sounds fine (I can’t speak for the performances themselves, but the audio quality seems fine), but Capcom has still seen fit to re-record the entire game’s Japanese audio.

No word yet on whether the English dub (which is uh… pretty bad) will be getting a new recording as well, but it’s still pretty exciting to hear that Capcom’s putting any work at all into this. Part of the beauty with remasters is that they’re generally speaking, pretty cheap to produce. Half the time the “remastering” is more just the game running at max specs or are simply using uncompressed versions of the original textures than actually having been touched up in any real way. It’s nice to see at least some effort being put in. Not anywhere near as much as Resident Evil Zero HD got (say what you want about the game itself, but that’s arguably one of the best remasters ever made) but it shows a degree of confidence in the remaster’s performance.

If you’re interested, the full cast list has been released, and while many voices have been replaced, series lead Samanosuke Akechiwill once again be voiced by his Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro:

  • Samanosuke Akechi (voiced by Takeshi Kaneshiro)
  • Nobunaga Oda (voiced by Fumihiko Tachiki)
  • Kaede (voiced by Mikako Komatsu)
  • Yuki (voiced by Kaori Nazuka)
  • Yumemaru (voiced by Hisako Kanemoto)
  • Hideyoshi Toyotomi (voiced by Wataru Takagi)
  • Guildenstern (voiced by Houchuu Ootsuka)
  • Hecuba (voiced by Mayumi Sako)
  • Narration (voiced by Mugihito)
