Capcom appears ready to re-release the original 1996 version of Resident Evil for modern platforms. The European rating board, PEGI, recently listed the game for PC, sparking excitement among fans.
The original Resident Evil was available on PC back in 1996, but it is no longer accessible on modern storefronts like Steam. Currently, none of the initial Resident Evil games are available for purchase on these platforms. PlayStation Plus offers the remixed Director’s Cut version in its classics library.
The original Resident Evil (1996) has been rated for PC in Europe. Resident Evil was technically already released for PC in 1996, but I guess it's not actually available via Steam or any digital marketplaces these days. pic.twitter.com/hVHlkCWRrx

Capcom has successfully released three remakes of RE games in the past five years. Yasuhiro Anpo, director of the Resident Evil 4 remake, confirmed the company’s plans to release more remakes. “We’ve released three remakes so far, and they have all been received very well,” Anpo stated (thanks VGC). He expressed joy in making these older games available to modern audiences and indicated that more announcements would come in the future.
Fans are hopeful that this re-release might include the entire original trilogy. The availability of the first game on PC raises speculation about the possible re-release of the second and third titles as well.
