New World War Z Trailer Shows off PVPVZ Combat

While any hopes of getting a second film in the World War Z franchise have just recently fizzled out, the World War Z game is still coming, and still looks pretty neat actually. The one truly unique and cool thing the movie offered where it’s “wave” zombies for lack of a better term (swarm doesn’t really do them justice), and the game seems to be nailing that. Just released today, the developers have shown off World War Z‘s PvPvZ mode — that’s Player vs Player vs Zombie fyi. Frantic and panic-driven from the looks of the trailer, my curiosity has piqued. Several games have tried this style of three-way combat where one of the teams is an AI, and I’ve honestly always found it more frustrating than intense. From the press release:

While World War Z ‘s core four-player co-op pits you against relentless swarms of AI zombies, PvPvZ offers a completely unique experience, challenging you to outlive each other and the dead in a variety of competitive modes designed for 4v4 combat.

What separates PvP in World War Z from other multiplayer games is the zombie swarm, which storms the arena throughout the match, forcing players to battle each other and the undead, allowing the tide of the fight to turn into an instant. World War Z wants to launch the following multiplayer modes:

  • Scavenge Raid : Players race to secure resources across the map to win.
  • Vaccine Hunt : Players must pick up and hold an objective to earn points for the team.
  • Swarm Deathmatch: Two teams go head to head in a bitter fight to the end.
  • Swarm Domination: Capturing zones to earn points and win a team victory.
  • King of the Hill: Capture a single hill, then control it to earn victory points.

Powered by Saber’s dynamic Swarm Engine ™, World War Z‘s fast-moving, bloodthirsty zombies are a nail-biting action experience across the world, including New York, Moscow, Jerusalem and more. Play in co-op with up to three friends using six distinct classes and an arsenal of deadly weapons, explosives, turret, and traps to demolish the undead menace and survive another day.

I’m down. World War Z still doesn’t have an official release date yet — but is expected to arrive on Xbox One, PS4, and PC sometime this year. Check out the trailer below!
