New SOMA Trailer Reveals That the Game is Set Underwater

When first revealed, it looked like Frictional Games’ latest horror game SOMA would take place in space. With a futuristic aesthetic and possibly a story involving alien technology, many assumed the game would be aboard a floating or derelict space station, but we were wrong. The “Lambda” trailer for SOMA has dropped today and with it our first look at where the game will be set.

The trailer starts out suggesting a zero gravity environment, but as the camera pans out we’re given a look at fish, crustaceans, and a barnacle ridden vessel. With this news I’m sure people will bring up Bioshock, which is also a horror game in an underwater society. But I wouldn’t worry too much about similarities, because SOMA‘s video logs do suggest that the game will still be set sometime in the future.

Frictional Games no doubt surprised a lot of people today with this reveal. Hopefully we’ll see more of the game soon to get an idea of how it will play and how water will affect gameplay. I can already imagine the slow swimming segments through dark barnacle-encrusted hallways and weird barnacle monsters; I can’t wait!
